Withers (beat SPENDTHRIFT, HAROLD)
Although he won the Withers over stablemate Spendthrift, undoubtedly the latter was superior colt; according to contemporary accounts, latter was "pulled double" so that Dan Sparling, carrying Keene's betting money, could win. As a result of this race, the racing rules were amended to require that owners make a "declaration to win"
if more than 1 horse from the same stable was entered in a race so bettors would know which the owner preferred to have win and could thus adjust their bets.
2yo: 2nd Central Stk (Pimlico dash)
3rd Champagne
Monmouth 1880 - race judge threatened with violence for putting up this horse vs. timers' perceived winner FERIDA, but it stood.
This horse fraught with scandal!
"Stakes & Major Handicap Winners and Their Dams" claims this horse is female family A27.
