I've noted a lot of people already wetting down their feed in here, so I thought I'd throw in my grandma's idea (she used it for the dairy cows, but it works well for all species, people included!) She used to save all the water used to boil potatoes for dinner and wet the feed with it. Most of the ...

Tonight, the air temp here in North Dakota will reach -20 with windchills hovering at -50. My boys have been thriving in weather like this with nothing more than a run-in shed, free choice hay and the help of a hot beet pulp and molasses mash every night with their grain. I liken the beet pulp and m...

Somewhat random...but he did produce a Grade I winner in Precocity and an unbelievable amount of mares in the Upper Midwest are by him...the "he" is the Hoist the Flag stallion, Aferd.

Leading sire in North Dakota for 10 straight years! :)

Our local university, NDSU, has an equine program churning out 50-60 students every year with "Equine" majors...only 1 of which has actually gotten a job with horses in recent years. At $2500 a month, I guarantee that if you sent a notice to these equine campuses, you would get a response!

Temperment vs. Racing Ability

I'd just like to take a general survey of people's experiences with "quiet" vs. "difficult" horses they have bred that were runners vs. not runners. For example, does a quiet, laid back yearling mean he lacks competitive drive? Does a rasty, rough and tumble horse mean he'll be tougher and more comp...

I attended South Dakota State University and the equine unit owned a working QH stallion for many year that consistently produced about 1/3 Wobblers from foals (how's that for a sire's statistic!). The reason he got enough foals on the ground to get those stats was that the Wobbler's didn't surface ...

Tiago is running in 2009? If so, WOO! He was actually my favorite of the entire crop from 2007! I saw he was on the docket for Adena, but then I had not heard more...could be interesting!

Has anyone ever heard the old-timey rumor that Top Deck and his kin had temperment problems ala Storm Cat and co? In essence they were tough competitors but difficult around the barn? If true, what a fun cross that will be!

Just a note on the QH breed in general...the QH breed in recent decades has evolved into several distinct sub-types. IE: Western Pleasure-type, Halter-type, Cutting-type, Racing-type and so on. You would no more breed a Cutting QH to a Racing QH that you would a Shetland to a Shire and expect to get...
