They can be treated with Regumate and that will sometimes resolve them. I would try that first and then US so see if it worked. It did work with a mare that I know personally
and she was said to have a fairly large one found on palpation.

I assume the horse was an "out" because it did not meet the reserve, find out the reserve and the highest bid if you can and go somewhat higher.
