Cherokee Run has a couple of exciting runners this year that we may hear more from soon. Zanjero (he’s number 23 in next week’s Derby Futures) is a promising 3YO who goes in the La Derby on Saturday. And the race Chelokee (bred like Yonaguska) won on Saturday at GP was simply amazing. In that race h...

The paragraph below was taken from Patterns of Greatness II. Perhaps some traffic trouble contributed to this injury? “Shipped to Arlington Park for the Citation Handicap, Forli had a rough trip, was knocked into the inner rail, and was eventually beaten a length by Dorimar. Forli pulled up lame, x-...

Another interesting and perhaps significant pedigree attribute found in David Junior is the sex-balanced duplications of Never Bend (4x4) and Prince John (4X5). These come via horses bred on a reverse cross of NB and PJ in the middle of the pedigree.

Jazil and Keyed Entry are good examples, but it’s Seek Gold’s dam who has female family inbreeding, not Seek Gold himself. His dam, Aly’s Adita, is inbred to Two Lea 4x3. Another horse bred like that is Bluegrass Cat. His dam, She’s A Winner, is inbred 5x6 to Glamour. Third place Belmont finisher Su...

Rommy Faversham wrote about Olympia in the March 4, 2006 issue of The Thoroughbred Times. His article, titled “The Olympian Style of Fred Hooper,” details the racing and breeding career of Olympia. Faversham reports that 3% of current stallions contain a strain of Olympia within four generations. He...

Fans of sex-balanced linebreeding and female family linebreeding will take notice. Within six generations the colt has two female duplications; Aspidistra 5x6x6 and Sequence 5x6. And there are six male duplications; all are sex-balanced. Also, interestingly, this colt’s sire and dam share the same f...

In a pre-awards interview on TVG last night, he mentioned the name of that 3YO that he has Derby aspirations for; Travelin Leroy. This is a Two Punch colt out of a Holy Bull mare who won his only start. Gill says he named this guy after a favorite groom of his.

Hi Pete, Thanks for your very thoughtful comments on this topic. In my post, I was wondering if there are specific pedigree attributes (e.g. more filly factors than colt factors?) which would help us choose one mare over another as a broodmare prospect. I wasn’t attempting to address the more genera...

It probably depends on the female side of the pedigree, and not just on CC himself. Clive Harper's analysis (The Thoroughbred Broodmare Book; The Thoroughbred Breeder's Handbook) indicates that good broodmares, generally, have both types of filly factor duplications in their pedigrees. That is, a go...

Take a look at Louis Quatorze for Water Kris. You'd have female family inbreeding to Grey Flight and to Shenanigans (dam of Ruffian.)

This is a very clever stallion promotion, but I wonder how many of the yearling owners would take them up on this offer. From the 100 mares under consideration for the guarantee, there might only be 65-75 yearlings actually subject to the offer. I suspect most of these owners would be more optimisti...

I'm keeping the faith about the NY breeding program. Once the state gets through all this, and it will, the impact of slots on purse money is likely to have a huge impact on purses. This can only make NY-breds that much more valuable, whether we breed to race or to sell.

Does anybody have an opinion about Proud Citizen as a bubble stallion? PC had huge books of mares, and based on the CI, he's getting some good ones. In 2004 he was bred to 157 mares with a CI of 1.74; this year he was bred to 136 mares with a CI of 1.81. Those are terrific CIs given the size of his ...

Bull Dog meets your requirement of a brother who was less successful on the track, but more successful at stud. Louis mentioned BD's race record and number of stakes winners. Compared to Sir Gallahad as a racer, Bull Dog was rated 15 to 20 pounds behind his form. In the stud, BD sired 15.2% stakes w...
