Geez, that's a lot of money. I agree, Morningside, people new to the business need to know going in how expensive it will be from start to finish. All the care, hay, straw, and vet costs really add up. I have a friend who wanted her maiden mare to foal in Kentucky so she brought her to me, heavy in ...

I'm not sure if a cemetery has to be registered but in Kentucky you can bury family members on your property in a family cemetery.

I've had several Houdinis myself; made me wonder which was more desirable, a smart horse or a less intelligent one  ? One standardbred yearling would open ALL the stall doors and then the pasture gate, too. She even climbed up onto the front porch and found my bedroom window. "Um, excuse me, ma...

Nice area to live...but you want a storm shelter or basement. I don't think there are any zoning restrictions as far as how many horses per acre in agricultural zones. I'm a transplanted yankee who grew up in the snow belt of upstate NY...I find the summers miserable but then again without a Great L...

I'm glad you posted about this. I had no idea...

Just the other day, I re-learned how to give an IV injection. Now, I will avoid the IM for banamine.

Re: Weanlings through killer auctions?

I was just wondering how young you generally see horses go through the auctions where killer buyers are likely lurking. Also do you ever see demonstrably pregnant mares there? Or heard of a mare that turned out pregnant but they were going to buy for slaughter if they could've gotten her cheaply? I...

It will work out. Just listen to your horse, she'll tell you everything you need to know. Listen carefully, though, so you don't end up with hoof prints enbruised somewhere on your body.

Whether she has been abused or not, the training is still the same. Don't let her get away with anything. Your approach might be different, though. For instance, if she has been whipped, you won't get her undivided attention if you show up carrying the object she fears. Another object, a rope, for e...

I do, but only after a horse trusts me. I start by just rubbing the horse with a blanket and work up to the old fashion sacking.

I used to do foster care for two of the tb rescue/adoption groups. They sent me some nut cases from time to time. These were horses much worse off mentally than your filly is. Sounds like your horse is telling you how much she dislikes where she is currently boarded. It's a good idea that you are mo...

The thing I like about the Icecapade line is how smart they are. Jamra can open and close her stall latch. She not only lets herself out of her stall but puts herself in, closes the door behind her and moves the latch into place. It took Rosie, that 4 year old mare, exactly two minutes to figure out...

Nope, I don't see Tom and Roses there. So it must be the other "Lady."

That would make her an Icecapade relative then? No wonder "Tom" has that "I'm the King" attitude.

Are you sure you have the correct Lady Barrister? I checked the progeny on the 1987 model on the board, and they have Tom and Roses (G), listed as hers. That is incorrect. His dam was the 1994 Lady Barrister, by HAWKSTER out of an Icecapade mare. If the latter mare is the dam of those two...I can t...
