What about Whirlaway? He was pretty old when he went to France. I don't know if he did well there.

"Mr. Longtail" died in 1953, at the age of 15. He'd been in France since 1950.

How could that be? I didn't think Phar Lap had an opportunity to sire any offspring, do you mean to say she shared similar ancestry?

Re: How to save racing in California

They opened parking lots that haven't seen cars since Seabiscuit raced here. Great to see so many people out at the track, albeit with alterior motives, a lot of folks will have fun and do it again Seabiscuit never raced at GGF; the track didn't open until 1941, a year after he retired to Willits. ...

Re: Barbie for the Derby?

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/49989/derby-barbie-unveiled-by-cdi-and-mattel They made a barbie for the Derby. Little girls don't care about the significance, they'll just think she has a neat hat I know a lot of adults who are Barbie collectors - my guess is that Mattel is looking...

In reading the article I note that the headline and first few paragraphs refer specifically to racing fatalities. Training fatalities are discussed separately about midway thru the article, in part as follows: Arthur said that fatalities during training are running at about the same level as in past...

Re: magna

The dangerous thing for California race fans is that both of Magna's big CA tracks, Santa Anita and Golden Gate, are worth much more as commercial/residential developments than they are racetracks. If Magna bails out, we could loose both tracks to malls/condos. Can you imagine NorCal without Bay Me...

IMO the answer to the original question is simple - there is really only ONE track left in the NorCal region (other than some small tracks which are only open for fair racing) and that is GGF. Jerry's home base had been Bay Meadows - he lives (or lived - I imagine he'll be thinking of moving now) ri...

Thoroughbred racing employs too many people and earns too much money to ever be shutdown. If that were true, I wouldn't be driving past the corpse of Bay Meadows Racetrack - the grandstand is just about torn down and it is a sad sight to say the least. Had the city of San Mateo approved the install...

I must have missed the plates... I teach a fitness class on Saturday and Sunday mornings so missed some parts of the auction...I also agree that the auctioneers were kind of, well, rude to say the least - the video and audio on the internet feed was less than stellar :( especially on day 3. I INTENT...

I was hoping for something small and affordable (like dishes) too...especially since they advertised that this would be an opportunity to get a souvenir of the place. Not everyone has $800 kicking around to buy a picture off the wall (especially since it was cash or cashier's check only). Didn't eve...

Hubby did mention that the first set of poles (auctioned off near the beginning) went for some outlandish price. Missed the other poles which were auctioned off on Day 2. isn't that fiber stuff the kind of thing that is mixed in concrete to make it stronger? Not sure...thought it might be left from ...

Hubby and I paid our final respects (unless the BMLC allows the public one final visit prior to the teardown) yesterday afternoon. Unlike Friday, they decided to lock the gates out to the track itself. Disappointing as both hubby and I wanted to walk down the track like I did on Friday. I guess they...

I watched bits & pieces of it today. Did it end early? Hubby and I went out for our Saturday lunch date/motorcycle ride at 1:30 and got home at 4:30 - tried to log back in and assumed the day was over as I was connected but no video server. Of course all those lots of chairs and tables, etc that...

I hear ya on the historic site thing - the FOBM and Save Bay Meadows bent over backwards to try and save the track including eligibility as an historic site...however the City of San Mateo seemed to be bound and determined to have it torn down. Anyone here planning on going to the auction this weeke...
