A good way to check for injury is to check for heat , and a good way to check for heat is by purchasing a laser thermometer, which you can purchase at an auto parts store for less than two hundred dollars. It can help with early detection of problems. It measures temperature changes in tenth of degr...

I like Gold Regent. He is a heavily muscled horse - and Lucas was quoted as saying he was the best looking prospector he had seen. I bred to him 3 yrs ago - one did not conceive, and the other unfortunately delivered a huge foal that tore her uterine artery. The foal did not survive either. He defin...

Halo - Suave Prospect is in New Mexico. I follow one of his progeny with special interest, and racing in your neck of the woods - Worldliness. She ran for a 5000 tag a few months back - even after winning a 5.5 furlong allowance at Gulfstream in 55 and change.

God's speed Bill. Hang in there - and eat beets - the ribose sugar found in them has been shown in some studies to accelerate the recovery period.

If they have little loading experience, I've always had the best result loading them in a small pen (stall size) first that has access for the trailor to back up to. This safely restricts their movement and focuses their attention. The first time will be easier to load than following times if the ho...

Purse Distribution

I was reading an article TT ran concerning the statistics of racing for 2005. I've never had experience of a racing secretary, but this statistic to me seems to be a problem - "claiming races accounted for 66% of all races but distributed just 37.1% of all purses." This could directly influence numb...

My favorite "southern meal" - fried chicken, sweet potatos, turnip greens, cornbread dressing, beets, and peach cobbler.

I took trackgal's question of weight as an issue of the heavily muscled horse, since we all know that an obese horse won't successfully compete. The most common injury TBs suffer are bone/joint injuries and tendon injuries - issues that can be affected by the heavily muscled thoroughbred we are bree...

Very good point, George. The matrix of the bone is what gives the bone strength - not the size of the bone. Fine boned does not mean weak boned - there is a radiographic study that was performed on 2 yr old horses in training showing the rate of bone transformation ( increasing the bone matrix densi...

Interesting post Ilbean. Something to consider. While I follow your logic of "potentially" decreasing genetic diversity, the same logic applies to limiting runners to dirt, or any surface we presently have. Adaptation has always been a requirement for success. I would believe that any adjustments ma...

I am for Polytrack. Sure, the unknown is always disturbing. But I'll take a five year track record of improved safety now over possible catastrophic injury seen at all major tracks due to surface degredation. As a layman (i.e. not a scientific response) regarding the track surface, potential breathi...

I have a like tail female line -Spring Beauty- in the line that I have several mares from. Classy old line. The combination of Spring Beauty with Storm Cat didn't hurt Forest Wildcat any - best of luck to yours.
