As to the original post, let me say I am not a bettor as a rule. I handicap for fun, but in order to bet they want you to give them money. I don't like handing over money unless it's to the feed store or my crew. So I usually bet as a mental exercise. I bet the .50 pick 5 at Del Mar yesterday just b...

I've had good luck with the combo of farrier and using 5cc of conjugated estrogen, IM, 2x a week 7 times (basically a full 35ml bottle of estro). Beats internal blistering or injecting the joint. Lots of trotting and daily backing up in hand 15-20 steps 2x a day in addition to the regular training s...

TDN has run ads in the past and sometimes even Twitter and Craigslist. I'm not sure that the best jobs are advertised - more like word of mouth. You are probably right about that, I have a few feelers out back in KY, but would really more comfortable in a "satellite" state - I have witnessed first ...

Where Would You Look?

I am seriously considering stopping training a public stable. I made a bad (in hindsight, of course) move to another state 6 years ago and, while I have a few very good clients here now, I am increasingly disgusted with running against "needles and numbers." I also have a young daughter and the foll...

When a vet stops the farm call charge he/she will get more work than they know what to do with and in the process put a hurt on other vets. Im waiting for the 1st vet to do this. When they stop the "Farm call charge" you will start seeing the "exam charge". Eh, $25 for them to leave their clinic, d...

Lone Star Park?

Looks like we are going to try to send a few to Lone Star this year. Never been to any TX tracks. Anyone have any insight to offer? I have a place off track for my assistant to stay already. Sadly, I won't get to stay there a whole lot myself, just a few in-and-outs. Any suggestions, caveats, or "yo...

......Either that or isn't there a way to get a barren mare to lactate with hormones? Or do they HAVE to have a foal?... There has been a lot of experimentation, and success, with using hormones to get a non-pregnant mare to lactate; I think where that process would fall off is behaviourally - ie: ...

Nowadays there are a lot of rescues who take in proffessional nurse mare's foals to bottle raise them. In the old days, most were euthanized.

" If the stewards' decision stands, runner-up Gal About Town would become the winner and purse money would be redistributed. Royse said there should be no forfeiture of purse money. He said that 43 previous first-offense Class C violations in the past three years in Kentucky did not carry a purse fo...

FWIW, we had several tracks in IL that ran harness part of the year and TBs part of the year. The harness track served as the base for the TB track and it worked out fine. We had less breakdowns at the old Sportsman's and at Hawthorne, both of which ran both breeds at different times, than we did at...

FWIW, where I am whole oats are at #26/100 and decent alfalfa is at $420/ton. Good grass (timothy/orchard grass) is almost $500/ton and bermuda grass ("eh") is at $450/ton. Beet pulp, wich I use alot of, is $749/ton. We can still get gallop boys for $10/mount and my grooms get $16/day/head (roughly)...

Lot of Sudan hay out here. Mostly for cattle. Neighbor fed it for awhile (free choice) and his horses looked like Sudanese refugees. According to my vet it can case kidney problems if fed for very long and it is a big no-no for pregnant mares. Even if you are using it for bedding, who's to say they ...
