I saw that - didn't realize that's what had broken off. He did a great job in spite of that and had one of the nicest horses... Also saw the palomino, ridden by one of the leading reining people that everyone seems to gush over. Horse looked tense and seemed to be having some problems balancing in h...

Did you read the comments that went along with the article? It's possible she's not as old as claimed. Although, really, even a 20 yr old horse taking 10 mile trail rides with a 280 lb passenger is impressive.

You're right, they are rare. I thought his blackness would help ID him - searched him top to bottom for any non-black hair and came back empty. BUT I didn't go quite far enough in my hunt. Sissy's Print is supposed to have a small chestnut spot on the back of his right hind sock. Sure enough, this h...

That's what I thought might be the case with the gender issue. If he came off the track as a stallion, and no one wanted to breed him, the gelding wouldn't HAVE to be reported, correct? This boy is bllllack. But I have only seen him in his spring and winter duds. He may look different as a sun bleac...

Sissy's Print 1990

I'm researching the tattoo on a friend's horse. She recently was given a nice old boy in need of TLC and groceries and she's doing a great job with him. We are reasonably sure he is Sissy's Print, foaled in 1990. We were able to read all but one number, and so we tried his markings with every possib...

Moxidectin is typically not used in underweight horses, either. The chemical is stored in fatty tissues.. when body fat is depleted it stores in areas of the anatomy one really doesn't want extra chemicals floating around in.

When I look back a few years, I am amazed by what I used to think was necessary. We're originally from a very warm part of california and would blanket when it was "cold". We moved to this part of the country about 6 years ago and have drastically changed the way we respond to weather. In doing so, ...

Wow, that's good to know. I asked this vet what the course of treatment is for cysts and he just shook his head. Perhaps the location is different? I'll have to call and ask.
thanks.

uterine cysts?

Does anyone have any experience with mares who have uterine cysts? My mare was diagnosed with a clump of 3 small cysts in the lumen. She's a 12 yr old mare who foaled once in 2005 (the 2004 breeding was live cover, and EASY from what I was told). She was bred again live cover in 2007. I didn't own h...

Wow, dunno. YOu seem to have your bases covered. Heat lamp in the carport? A couple of heat lamps in the carport? It won't really make it tropical but it will take the edge off. The only problem with that is the constant light, I suppose. You don't sound like a person that would have deworming issue...

We have ridiculously cold weather here and our biggest problem most of the time is windchill. A few nights last week we were around -35 because of the 20+mph wind. Lovely. Our have access to a run in shed and a gigantic windbreak across most of their winter paddock. Heated trough. We don't blanket. ...

Yay! She'll put on one of her fancy holiday sweaters and get her hair done.

It's kinda funny to see successful racehorses and know she's related. I can outrun her...but she has a terrific brain and acts so much like a good TB mare. Awesome cross, I'm fortunate she's in my pasture.

I can't help myself, when I see those horses I get all giggly. They are beautiful and those breeders have a knack for creative and memorable names. My appy mare Spots on Saras Toga is a distant relation - she's out of Saratoga Sal. Not all that distant - Saratoga Sal is Aphillynamedjilly's dam &...

@photofinish - no bandages and the shaved areas were very clearly confined to the knees. Also, this picture was from mid-summer in New Mexico, so cold wouldnt' be a factor. That's interesting information, though. Trackgal and crystal, I've seen both shaved and non-shaved knees for injections. I gues...
