Anybody have any success with any of these treatments? I have a young friend witha TB/Arab cross. Spent $3000. on Marquis and then Navigator. He got better and then he didn't. They tried a third compounded sulfa. They tried oxytetracyline, high dose for 5 days. They tried arsenic IV. Still doesn't k...

levamsole
This injectable cattle wormer was used on horses when it first came out, but at theraputic doses it causes neurological and psychological changes in the horse. It also has the same problem in horses as it does in cattle, in that the worms develop immunity quickly. So it may work well the first time ...

bute
Griff,
Don't use bute. Great anti-inflammatory, bad medicine in people. It has been linked to aplastic anemia in people--a death sentence. Use Aleve or Advil etc. tested safe. Mary Syers

Cromolyn sodium is a mast cell suppressor. That is, it prevents immediate inflammation. It probably would be useful in helping limit upper respiratory inflammation if administered right before the race--at least within hours. It has been used for acidic stomachs, eye allergies, and asthma. Difficult...

Can this horse still concentrate urine? i.e. What's his urine concentration when deprived of water for a time? This can tell you how much kidney is left if he isn't totally over doing the water intake. Mary Syers

epm vqccine
What little I know about the vaccine:
The vaccine is effective and I have heard, but not read in the literature, relatively safe. It protects from one stain of protazoa. The problem is that there are at least seven strains that cause epm. Help but not complete prevention. Mary Syers

cushings
Cushings is a treatable, although expensive, disease in horses. Wouldn't they have had Secretariat on the treatment? I don't know for sure. I just remember reading the words. Maybe someone with better connections can ask. Mary

hairline fracture
I think it would depend on where the fracture was and how bad the resulting break would be. Even a small bone chip is extraordinarily painful and so is shin bucking which is really small semi-circular fractures in the cannon bone. So I can't imagine a horse being sound with even a small hairline fra...

secretariat
Seth Hancock was quoted in the Blood Horse shortly after they put Secretariat down, as saying that they knew he had cancer and that was why he foundered. Long time ago, but I remember it because of the Bold Ruler cancer and the Victrolic cancer. Mary Syers

Shammy,
Try this article, it explains the p53 control gene better than my poor explanation.
