Question 1: Obviously it can't hurt to go back to the well. So you could try breeding back to Kissin Kris. But more importantly, IMO, I'd try to see if there was a trend in the conformation of Kissin Kris and the mare, and the resulting foals. It seems that this mare's greatest attribute is to throw...

$5m for that mare was a crazy price. Considering that on the same night Castleton Lyons paid $3.35m for Toccet, and had 145 mares booked to him within about 2 weeks at $12,500 and then $17,500 apiece. It's a nice story, and I hope the mare turns out to be blue-hen, but her price tag, and Smarty's ow...

Cheryl, DP = Dosage Profile DI = Dosage Index CD = Centre of Distribution Reading the dosage profile (the 5 digits) from left to right, is supposed to give you a hint as to how much speed vs stamina the horse is question has. Certain "influential" sires have been designated "chef-de-race" stallions ...

BTW, I think they get that figure fromt the "Inbreeding Report" thing on this database; personaly, I think it's probably a mistake to look at a figure like that which desiccates the crosses of the ancestor by estranging them from the context in which they appear. -llbean Thanks llbean, as always. A...

Another question, a bit off topic...... Occasionally I have read posts where people have said a certain horse's pedigree contains a specific "percentage of blood" of certain ancestors. For example, "horse A has 4.52% Bold Ruler blood." Can anybody give me the source from which these numbers are deri...

I appreciate everybody's input. In particular, I agree with Joe, that the surface bias of a racehorse might be due to the horse's connections only trying the horse on the surface that 'fits' its pedigree. Certainly, history is full of grass running horses that sired great dirt horses and vice versa....

In order to ascribe significance to duplications in a pedigree, you'd have to show that horses without that duplication are inferior. Just counting the St. Simon replications in top quality sires of today doesn't say much if failed TBs have just as much St. Simon blood. Also, as the previous 2 repli...

A Question to the Board

I really enjoy reading the opinions of many breeders and owners on this board. I would like to pose a question, and open this for discussion....... In your opinions/experiences, how much does pedigree influence (a) dirt or turf preference of a racehorse, and (b) stamina? In other words, can you bree...

My personal feeling is to rank them this way: 1st: The high quality racehorse with a strong pedigree (obviously) 2nd: The high quality racehorse with an unfashionable family (Tiznow, for example). There is a real risk associated with breeding to these individuals, in my opinion. The freakish horse t...

Claiborne first.....the rest nowhere ;) That is an incredible farm to visit. There is so much history, and it still has a "feel" that many of the other large, commercial farms have lost. It's almost like stepping back in time (in a good way). Personally, I would recommend visiting after breeding sea...

LSB brings up an excellent point that Sheikh Mohammed wants to win the Derby on his terms. He has bought top prospects late in the day (China Visit, IIRC?) with a view to having a runner, but it hasn't worked out. I think he is far more interested in proving to the world that he can breed, raise, tr...

OK, I'll try....... :) Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the most recognisable Arab figure in racing for the last several years. He was the first of his family to get involved and he started Darley Stables/Farms. Under the Darley "banner" his silks were maroon with white sleeves and a white s...

It would be sad, to say the least, if the horse is sent off to stud on the basis of his one win, his $4.5m price tag, and his pedigree. I admit that I thought he looked like an incredible prospect when he won that maiden. If indeed he is packed off to stud shortly, it's a sad day for racing. If he i...
