Flipped Palate

A trainer scopes a horse after a below par performance. The vet announces that the horse suffered from a 'flipped palate' during the race, which of course is the reason given to the owner for a poor performance. Is this just one of the many excuses trainers give to owners to appease them, you know t...

Disappeared for awhile

How rude of me! I start a post and then don't stick around to see who replies. Actually, I just got back from my honeymoon! A whirlwind tour of the southern coast of Ireland, which of course included a stop at the Irish National Stud. But now that the wedding plans are over, I can get back to concen...

Opinion on weight

My little (14.3 hands) filly ran 3rd in a maiden special weight yesterday. As a 3 yr. old, she was only required to carry 113 lbs- the rider carried 119 lbs. She missed 2nd by a fast closing 3/4 of a length. The race was at a mile, she is showing that she needs more distance. I was wondering what yo...

Congrats

That is so exciting! I think that this is the reason that so many of us enter into the world of horse racing. As someone who has given so much of their time and money to this sport (on a percentage basis, about 100% of available cash, lol), I can really appreciate how you must feel. My first born is...

Megahertz

I read the best article in this past week's Blood Horse about Megahertz. I wasn't really that familiar with her story before that. I knew she was a nice race mare, but is she really only 800 lbs? Has anyone heard how tall she is? That is amazing her giving up all that size and strength and still pou...

If someone has a chance, can they check out my filly Quick Verdict (Doneraile Court out of Athena's Answer) and tell me what their guess is of her carrying the X- factor based on her pedigree.

She is very dark, same color as her sire. I don't know about her turning out, maybe I am so worried about her stature that I don't notice, but she seems pretty straight to me. Is your Doneraile Court of average size? I hear that he throws some smallish types, not to the extreme that mine is, but on ...

Louis,

I named her Quick Verdict. Her sire is Doneraile Court and her dam is Athena's Answer, so I figured that when a court returns an answer, it is in the form of a verdict. I thought it was kinda clever.

So if it is still too early to know what I got, when will I know? Is there a particular time that makes you think 'Hey, I think I got a decent one'? Now I wasn't expecting her to go out and breeze a 48 flat, had she done that I wouldn't bother asking the question. Just because we are based out of Th...

The horse shipped up from Ocala almost a month ago, she is now stabled at Thistledown. The other filly is at the same fitness level, they both were trying a 1/2 for the first time after a few works at 3/8. I don't know if they called it a breeze or handily, but mine looked like she was being asked. ...

First Home Bred

I became a member here this past November when I wanted some opinions on my first yearling. She was just barely over 14 hands high and I wanted to know what experienced horsemen thought about that. Well, I have since tried to sell her, but no one really wants a horse that small, so I kept her and sh...

mtDNA

The more messages that I read the more impressed I am with the people on this site. Your knowledge and hypothesis on mtDNA is really amazing. After I retired my mare (due to injury) at the end of 2001, I began researching her pedigree to see if she was worth breeding to. By spring of 2002, I realize...

Gelding a weanling?

I got a cheap new born that I was going to put in my backyard, no real breeding to speak of and probably not destined for the track. Just to make it easier on me, I was going to have him gelded as soon as possible. What would be the earliest date you would consider for that? Are there advantages and...

Line and out cross breeding

I went through and read a bunch of your recent discussions. One post said basically that most people that are breeding and/ or buying don't know the difference between line breeding and out cross breeding. Well, I am sure I know what out cross breeding, but is line breeding going back along the sire...
