Quack wasn't a bad sire, not Storm Cat or Mr. Prospector mind you but not bad. His best sons were both injured--Encourage fatally and Dr. Daly (a half to Exploded) who was later gelded when he didn't come back the same from his injury. Quack had a nice filly for Jack Van Berg in the late '80's named...

Dirt or turf? The American Racing Manual would be a good place to look. Off the top of my head I am 99% sure that Dr. Fager still has the mile record (since equalled) and I'm 100% sure that Spectacular Bid holds the 10F record set at Santa Anita. 6.5F is held by Sabertooth and it was set last year a...

When I was very young and just becoming interested in the sport, John Sullivan trained a good grass horse by the name of Wing Out. I remember Shoemaker and Wing Out just outlasting Quack in a grass stake (Lakeside) at Hollywood Park over thirty years ago. Quack was high weighted and heavily favored ...

Bill from WA

Do you know who track photographer was at Longacres in the 1970's or how to find him/her? I know that Four Footed Fotos in Isaquah did it as of the early '90's.

Richard I know exactly what you mean. When Hallowed Dreams was being likened to Cigar and Citation and people could see nothing wrong with it I was quite incredulous. I'm not sure that Cigar belongs with Citation but that's another discussion for another day.

It should be noted that when a mile race is run on the Santa Anita turf course it is run on the flat and no portion of the race is run downhill. The only turf distances run down the hill at Santa Anita are abt.6.5f, 10f, 12f and abt. 14f. 9f and the aforementioned mile are run on flat ground.

I claimed a horse to retire him a little over two years ago. Before I did it however, I conferred with a few trainers who were familiar with the horse and thought it was the right thing to do. The trainer that claimed him for me said that he feared that the horse could snap a leg at any time. He als...

I remember Pataha Prince. I did a painting of him winning the Bing Crosby with Shoe aboard. I didn't know about the match race with the quarter horse. Was it at Longacres or down at Los Alamitos? I wish I had been able to visit Longacres from what I've seen on film it looked like a lovely track.

Bill do you remember Strong Award (by Strong Ruler) or is he before your time? He was born with only one eye if I remember right. I remember Frankel claimed him when he was nine and got him to be competitive against gr. 1 and 2 fields. Frankel had him until; he was 13 and then he was claimed away fr...

To those from Washington state.....

A few years ago a company named Perpetual Motion Pictures made a movie about the history of Longacres. I can't find anything on Perpetual Motion Pictures any longer so I would surmise they are no longer in business. Does anyone out there have a copy of this video? If so I would gladly pay to have a ...
