Larry Jones has a lot of fans! Sure hope he enjoys some time off but decides to come back in a year or two.

I discussed Jones' Derby entries recently in a blog post: http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/scot/archive/2009/03/05/jonesing-for-the-roses.aspx

As with most posters, I gauge weaning time on when I think each foal is ready. Generally, it's between 6 and 7 months. I also wean across a fence line, and make sure both mare and foal have a "friend" pastured with them. Right now, I've got a mid-April filly that I'm pointing towards the Keeneland N...

TRANSPORTATION WANTED Lex., Ky to Ohio and to Connecticut

I have two different transport needs coming up: Lexington, Ky. to Lebanon, Oh. I will be away from home when my mare comes back into heat and she's booked to an Ohio stallion. She'll have a newborn by her side (~3 weeks old). I'd like the shipment to be May 20-23, roughly. Lexington, Ky. to Connecti...

Well said, Hold Your Peace. And neat topic, Simengineer. The sample of 100 shows 16% of stakes winners as being the 6th or later foal from their dam... I wonder how that compares to the percentage of foals born in that category? It's easy to name hundreds and hundreds of mares that had a dozen or mo...

Re: Are there any nice places to live north of Lexington, KY

I may try to relocate to the US Postal Mail Processing Plant which is in the northern part of Lexington? I was thinking about Georgetown, Midway, and so on. Hey Keith! I used to have my horses right near the Nandino post office facility (about 3 miles down the road...). That 40-odd acres now -- sad...

Alladin Rib

With Alladin Rib hitting 23 this year, and harboring what appears to be a huge tumor behind his right eye, I figured that if I ever wanted to breed to him, I'd probably best make plans this year. I took the 2-hour trip up to Win-Row Farm in Lebanon, Oh., on Sunday and met with farm owner Chris Rosel...

More Quill

If you don't mind the multiple strains of Northern Dancer, look at Hero's Tribute ($5,000 at Buck Pond - http://www.bloodhorse.com/stallion-regi ... no=4451732). Doubling up on Quill is a big plus. Not a commercial pick, but might be a good match for a breed-to-race.

Re: perhaps

I think Albert the Great is underrated Why is he underrated? He looks to me to be a one hit wonder. Albert the Great: - AEI 1.34 vs. CI 1.25 (he got decent quality mares and slightly improved them) - Grade I winners: one excellent U.S. horse and two foreign grade I winners. I really wanted to go to...

Re: Anyone here from Nicholasville, Kentucky?

Anyone here from Nicholasville? I know I have asked about Harrodsburg and Mount Sterling before. Now I am looking at a job in Nicholasville. Any nice places outside of Nicholasville that would be a good place to look for a place to live? I am tired of the ice and snow here in Maine. Hey Keith. Nich...

Alan Porter wrote about the role of nicking products in his TrueNicks blog today: http://truenick.com/blog/2008/01/28/as-easy-as-a-b-c/ His analysis of the role of nick ratings is that they're useful only after narrowing the potential list of sires by evaluating conformation , class , and aptitude ....

Re: Bowen's Matriarchs

La Troienne and Myrtlewood were such plain looking mares according to their pictures. Roger, you're so right. The more I look at photos of the best broodmares, the more I reconsider what to look for when I inspect mares at the sales. The great ones aren't necessarily the most striking--they're ofte...

Re: Domino lines

... Broad Brush and Ack Ack were the last of the Domino line to breed on tail male. Even stepping back in the pedigree and looking at Himyar's larger line, there's only one additional source in most breeding populations. Rough'n Tumble looked promising for a while there, with Flag Raiser and Dr. Fa...
