The Science of Pedigree Analysis

I had the opportunity to write a short article in BlueBloods on the science that is behind pedigree analysis. Thought it would be worth reposting a copy of it here - https://drive.google.com/open?id=1T1hz3JuRAVnzVJqh86nHgyWeAwZNtlRT

Inbreeding affects racing performance

An interesting paper has been published " Founder-specific inbreeding depression affects racing performance in Thoroughbred horses " Some thoughts on it can be found here.... https://www.performancegenetics.com/single-post/2018/04/24/How-inbreeeding-affects-racing-performance-in-Thoroughbr...

Turkoman Sires at the Root of Thoroughbred Male Lines

For some this is confirmation of what was expected, for others it will be something different to what they have believed. Turkoman Sires at the Root of Thoroughbred Male Lines Makes you wonder if there was a "super sire" around the time of Genghis Khan or Tamerlane that proliferated in the...

Re: ITBF Delegates Oppose Speed Gene Testing

Reading it, the main objection is that the ITBF don't want a stud book somewhere in the world to enter into an agreement with a company to do any analysis of performance on horses whose DNA was collected for registration purposes only, but whose DNA still exists. Leadon noted that genomic companies ...

Re: X-Factor - Large Heart

Here is a link to a Thesis completed by an Australian researcher looking at the nuclear SNPs that are in genes associated with cardiac hypertrophy (large heart). Its the start of putting a genetic basis on cardio size and its noteworthy that none of the SNPs are on the X Chromsome. http://espace.lib...

Re: gallopade 1828

Family 23 overall has produced 8 KD winners. Very impressive for #23 at first glance but the facts must be taken into account that *Gallopade's branch (23-b) has undergone significant expansion since the Lowe numbers were assigned, and that there's an error somewhere in the record of her descendant...

Re: Chrome priced at $40,000

Based on earnings and performance yes, but he's going to be a tough commercial sell because of his sire. He appears to be a lone super freak for his dad. As a commercial breeder I think he's a bit too risky to invest in because buyers are not going to be very forgiving. Were you talking about Tizno...

Re: Image recognition of racehorses

It suffers a little through lack of sample size. The 500 or so just isnt enough but I am working on a larger and more accurate model that uses close to 10,000 images to learn on. That should be more accurate and more adaptable to horses not standing in a traditional pose.

Re: Image recognition of racehorses

The model increases accuracy if you select the button next to the class (elite or not elite) that the horse actually is.

Image recognition of racehorses

I'm working on an image recognition program that can classify yearling photos using a convoluted neural network. Here is the first go at it for all to take a look at. https://www.metamind.io/classifiers/40114 All you have to do is either upload an image of a yearling in a standard pose ...

Re: X-Factor - Large Heart

Stancaris, You've cherry picked my statement to suit your needs. The pre-amble to the 'therefore' states the reason for the statement. I think about a year or so ago I said that there are some X-Chromosome variants that have some relationship to performance but that other SNPs on other chromosomes h...
