I've come back to this thread several times, trying to figure out the right thing to say. I've decided that there is no "right thing to say" in these circumstances. "I'm sorry" just doesn't seem like enough...

First of all I want to thank everyone for their kind words. I got all dewy eyed reading them
I am waiting for the autopsy results. He died at Guelph university where he was being treated for septic shock. The big question is why he was in septic shock. As many of you know he had hurdles to overcome (aspiration pneumonia, umbillical absess and a mystery illness). He had been doing very well up until Friday when he became ill. The vet did not think it was serious - apparently is was more than serious
All the second guessing and what ifs will not bring him back and I am coming to terms with that.
I know that he is not suffering and he will never know unkindness. I would like to believe there is a heaven for horses and he is there, playing in large grassy fields with his friends. RIP little buddy.

Mood Swings,
So sorry for your loss. This summer we lost our 2 1/2 month old filly foal and it was a dreadful day so I know what your going through. Mine crashed into a gate and broke her neck. There one minuete, gone the next. That was my first experience with one of my own dying and it is heartbreaking. So my best whishes are with you.
God Bless
Terri

Mood - That is what they ruled as the cause for my Real Quiet colts death. He couldn't survive outside the mare. She was also septic and then developed peritinitis. And yes, I do believe there's a heaven where he's frolicking around with his friends and family. Hugs and God Bless - BTC

Loss
Mood Swings,
I am so, so sorry for your loss. I have not been on the query for a few days as I, too, suffered a loss and am currently sharing your pain. My 4 year old TB filly died of unknown causes overnight on Wednesday.
Her very first "mom" sent me a poem that really hit home and I hope you don't mind if I share it with you...for me, it's exactly how I am feeling right now.
Dear Ralphie,
It broke my heart to lose you.
But you did not go alone.
For a part of me went with you.
The day God called you home.
OMG. I just realized that Ralphie and Flea are together...they have to be.
My heart goes out to you in SO many ways...
Amy

Mood Swings,
I have been a lurker here for quite awhile and want to tell you how bad I feel for you and your Ralphie. And for you too, TB Dreamin'.
It is such a painful thing to lose a homebred foal. I know your heart is broken and there is nothing anyone can say or do to make it better. Just know that many are keeping you in our thoughts and praying for you. So sorry you have to go through this.
