It is with much emotion I must report the sad news of Takeover Target pulling up lame after the Gr 1 July Cup run earlier today.

Later veterinary tests found a crack to his near hind cannon bone.

He is undergoing surgery at the Newmarket Veterinary Hospital in England with trainer Joe Janiak by his side.

The champ has pulled through the operation well.

"Thankfully, it's all good news," Janiak told the Racing Post. "Takeover Target cracked a cannon bone but he's had five screws inserted and will be box-rested at the hospital for a couple of months.

"He seems fine after the operation and he needs to rest. He has been a fantastic horse and we have had some great adventures with him."

Takeover Target is officially retired.

The blockbuster movie about his rags to riches story is being finalised with Russell Crowe tipped to play Joe Janiak.

Sorry for replying so late, have been extremely busy with the racing back home.
How sad, but the main thing is that he came out of the operation well and I hope TT will be in no plain afterwards.
Thank you Arganaut for all you sent us, please keep us informed about TT and I hope you come back to this forum with another Australian star!

While TT recovers from surgery in England before returning home to a very well-deserved and pampered retirement in Australia, it hasn't stopped the Champion from adding to his already burgeoning trophy cabinet.

In a glittering awards ceremony in Sydney last night, Takeover Target won New South Wales (NSW) Champion Sprinter/Miler Of The Year and also his fourth NSW Country Champion Horse Of The Year title.

And although we won't see the Champ race again we will still be able to cheer on his 'family members' who appear to have inherited many of his trademark characteristics, especially courage.

Tomorrow his little half brother Predatory Pricer will step out in the $200,000 Group 2 J.J. Liston Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Big things are expected of the Street Cry entire who in the Autumn ran a narrow third - beaten less than a third of a length - in the blue ribbon A$1.6m Group 1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m).

From only 12 starts the striking chestnut has already won over A$500,000.

Predatory Pricer has been tuned up for his comeback with a recent Cranbourne trial win on August 3.

The Liston Stakes is regarded as one of the time-honoured spring board's to many of the spring riches, including the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.

He was just simply brilliant.

Sitting back towards the tail in a star-studded field that included unbeaten mare Typhoon Tracy and last year's Victoria Derby runnerup, Whobegotyou, Takeover Target's little half-brother, Predatory Pricer, looked like he had plenty within him.

As they rounded the turn jockey Steven King allowed the exciting chestnut to drift wide, balance up and come with a barnstorming run.

And run he did.

Under a great hold Predatory Pricer went to the line in front of Whobegotyou and Typhoon Tracy.

The legend continues.

Trainer Paul Murray is talking the Cox Plate with his star and possibly also the Caulfield Cup.

Spring has come early and boy, it looks exciting!

Who would of thought retired World Champion Sprinter Takeover Target's half-brother could be equal favourite for the $2.5m Group 1 Caulfield Cup over 2400m?

But that is the amazing situation that has unfolded this Spring as Predatory Pricer lines up this Saturday in what is considered "the toughest 2400m handicap race to win in the world''.

After brilliantly winning the 1400m Liston Stakes first up, Predatory Pricer, like his famous relation was throughout his career, has been a model of consistency.

Next start he ran a creditable 7th in the 1600m Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington, before a close third to Heart Of Dreams in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).

Then in an exciting finish to the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes over 2000m he beat all but the 2007 Group 1 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient, who landed a last stride win.

Predatory Pricer will line up in the Caulfield Cup on Saturday against some of the best stayers in the world.

The powerful Godolphin stable who won it last year have brought Kirklees to Australia while England's Luca Cumani, who has finished second in the Gr 1 Melbourne Cup for the last two years with Bauer and Purple Moon, will have Cima De Triomphe carrying the stable hopes.

As always there is a very strong Kiwi presence from 'the land of the long white cloud' - the home of many of the greatest thoroughbred nurseries in the world - New Zealand.

NZ-bred horses make up half the 18 strong field, led by 2007 Gr 1 Caulfield Cup winner Master O'Reilly, 2009 Gr 1 AJC Oaks winner, Daffodil and 2009 Gr 1 AJC Derby winner Roman Emperor, the latter trained by the 'Cups King', James Bart Cummings.

J.B. Cummings will have another strong hand in the race this year - like the Melbourne Cup (12) he has also trained more winners of the Caulfield Cup (6) than any other trainer in its 130-year history. Last Saturday's Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) winner, Allez Wonder, and 2008 Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) winner, Viewed, will also be saddled up by the training Legend.

It will be a great race!

Maybe not the same but I had a gelding with two cracks in his front left shin and a vet at the VA Tech Marian duPont Scotty Equine clinic explained to me that the screws are not inserted to hold the cracks together but to stimulate bone growth and repare.

And they are removed to stimulate additional rapid bone growth and repare.

In my case the recommendation was drill five holes to the marrow and insert a crew in the middle one. And when the screw was removed it is suppose to stimulate additional bone repaid..

same concept or theory as blistering but more civilized and probably more effective.

Why? I suspect that the owner/trainer is the one who is missing the limelight. A comeback after a "Farewell Tour" is not a good omen. Oh well, anything can happen in racing and frequently does.

Hi Arganaut,

Sorry to read this, but I guess this is the best for TT, as you said thanks for the moments and memories you gave us. We will never forget you.
