After what happened to Ferdinand, the industry really stepped up and set up programs to protect horses shipped over seas. Charismatic and War Emblem, I'm sure, will be shipped back to the states after the farms are done using them for breeding if they no longer want them.
Trackgal, what do you suggest "we" do?? There are so many rescues out there now. In reality, the thoroughbreds are the only breed that is really being cared for after its career is over. There are hundreds of other breeds out there, but where are their rescue teams? Quarter Horse Rescue? Arabian Rescue? etc. Thoroughbreds only made up 10% of the horses slaughtered when slaughtering was legal.
The market for breeds of horses other than thoroughbreds is almost non-existent. Horse owners need to stop breeding horses, period.
Why I hate PETA..

I watched the video, and several other MUCH worse on youtube. I also balled my eyes out when I was in TX and saw a 18 wheeler of horses heading to the border years ago. I have taken in many horses, rehabed and rehomed them, but I also work for a commercial breeding farm and have worked at the track. I've seen the same buyer there week after week. I'm sure many of us have done what we can, but we can all only do so much.
I'm of the opinion that the best thing we can do is to be good stewards of the horses that we have, keeping them as healthy as we can, as sound as we can within reason and then putting an effort into basic training so the horse can realistically be someone's pet. That's what creates value and value is what keeps them off the truck.
Sometimes life intervenes but that's what have tried to do both for my TBs and non TBs.

In this whole conversation, this is the best statement! All any of us can do is take care of OUR horses, and give them the best life we can possibly give them.
I love my horses as family, and I will always do all I can do to protect them, keep them safe, happy, healthy, and living with us. That's all I can do is my best. I pray I will never have to put one down, so forth and so on, but I'll always do my very best!

I think when discussing PETA or essentially any organization that is going to "make waves", we need to remember that the organizations on each far side of the issue help us see and get to the middle. Without the PETA type organizations we do not get the publicity that is needed to pull us back to the middle. We would have horrible abuse of all animals (remember the things done to carriage horses a la Black Beauty) if there were not groups publicizing what is really going on. Animals (and children!) were considered property and the owners could do anything they wanted to them. Look back historically in the 1800's and see the abuse. We need both sides to help us see the center. I think that "hate" is a pretty strong word. I might despise those who abuse animals but I don't think I'd hate the organization trying to protect them. While I am not a PETA member, I support an organization's need to educate others--even if I don't like the way they're doing it. I wish I weren't a meat eater, because I really don't like the way cattle, poultry and pigs are treated and slaughtered. But I feel I need to know how it's done so I can make that decision. I wish everything connected with all animals were humane, but it's not.

I hate 'em, and have no problem saying it. I hate them just like I do politicians, because they all love to lie!
Now, they go find this horrible video to show the horse slaughter, they show all the bad stuff and it's exaggerated.
Remember back when the republicans ran the senate, and wanted to reform school lunch, what was said? THEY WANT TO STARVE CHILDREN! Yeah right! But that's what was said, now OBAMA IS GOING TO KILL THE OLD AND INFIRMED! HORSE POCKEY!
Heck just a few months ago back in the Derby, they wanted to make this big dog gone deal about MTB coming to the Derby as his own drove him in his lil ole pickem up truck!
The truth isn't sensational enough and it doesn't sale! Who wants to see some story about the guy with the 4 old horses that he won't put down because he loves them so much, and he's spending his whole pay check to keep them alive and happy? BORING!
The person who cried when their 33 y/o mare died? BORING!
Peta is bunk! Distorted truth is called a lie!
I love meat, and I'm glad God put the chicken here for me to enjoy eating.
It's not the same, but I always ask the question, Do ya think the Zebra that's been attacked and eaten by the lion feels like this is quick and painless?
shhhh don't tell anyone, but we evolved to the top of the food chain! sshhh it's a secret.
Peta....I like my EX wife more than these clowns!

You know I have to make a comment on this one. We have a horse "buyer" that buys for slaughter. He live outside of town and he purchases anything. I can give names.
What happening NOW. Today. Hes latest trend are horses that dont cooperate, the buckers and biters, horses that Mow children down. " I had One"
He took a fresh 18 Wheeler out yesterday. He goes monthly. He advertises it and people do it.
Not to make matters worse, but what happens when we have a horse that is a bucker, biter and worse and horse that will terrify your children. Incidently I wanted to add, there is the WINECUP ranch here that is going to be housing alot of Wild Mustangs. And people want them dead too. The people here really think that the Mustang is not part of the culture in America. I beg to differ.
Its getting worse, some are rioters, but hey why is 17 million going to the Wild Mustangs and not just for horse retirement all together. It was in our paper yesterday.
And on top of that, I finally got my paper work to register my Stormy Jack filly and it asks for money for retired horses. Well thats fine, but I want to contribute to people like me that house my own retired horses. Point is 17 million to the Wild Mustangs??

The Humane Society and other reputable organizations "make waves" without lying to get a point across. PETA is nothing but a bunch of radical lunatics.
$17 million for"Wild Mustangs" when the only real mustangs left in the USA are a few bands in Eastern Organ.. The remaining "wild" horse are feral domestic stock and feral domestic stock are not a part of western culture.
In the meantime real American wildlife are disappearing because they can not comoete with the ever increasing numbers of feral domestic stock..
And I suspect the feral horse herd are going to increase even more now that horse slaugter has be out lawed.

If the ranchers in Nv, Wy would stop sending out their stallions to " Improve the hammerheads" it would be better. Now the Winecup it taking them, which is fine.
Montana intends to have a slaughter house open come the end of this year. The MQHA wants it and the Senator is for it so we shall see.
