that's the biggest load of malarky I've ever heard of, you're no longer an animal's owner? Who thought this up PETA???????? I think most people have their animals best interest at heart, the only ones who don't are greedy or have no morals whatsoever. Most people even in dire cirumstances, try to give their animals a better alternative than just killing them. In the case of genetic defects though, most of the time its better to put the animal down.

Owning thoroughbreds is two things, first and foremost a love of the animal, second, it's a business. It costs alot of money to own a thoroughbred, whether it's for racing, breeding, pinhooking or show. It's still a business and having the tax breaks is what helps people afford the costs. They are nuts............

That article is BS and should not have even been published by thehorse.com ... WHICH state has already taken this into consideration???? Please.. I'm sorry, I love my animals,, but they are "MY ANIMALS".. when they start contributing to the household income, then they will get a say it what goes on, and IF it looks like they are going to outlive me maybe they will get something in my will.. until then, Shut up and keep my lap warm.

This may be a modification of a quote from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry "who is best known for writing "The Little Prince". I don't have the exact quote, but he talks about the responsibility that humans have toward animals that they have domesticated. If you teach an animal to rely on humans for care it is cruel to abandon them. I think he was specifically talking about pets.
I do agree with the feeling. Once you have taken on the responsiblity of taking care of an animal, be it horse, cat, or pet garble, it is your job to see that the animal continues to get care.
I'm struck by the image of taking the gerbel cage out to the front lawn, opening the door and letting it out with the words "Live free little gerbil"
