Possible Scam Alert

Postby madelyn » Sat Jan 26, 2013 8:13 am

I, along with a couple of my pals, have gotten calls on horses for sale from "buyers" claiming to be in Tulsa, Northern Iowa, Alberta (Canada), etc. Each caller plays the role of the really illiterate country boy, who can't use a computer, who really wants to buy the horse, but first wants you to mail photocopies of the front and back of the horse's registration papers. In my case, the caller didn't know anything at all about the horse he was calling on (I have quite a few advertised for sale, with photos) except that it was a dark bay mare born in 2001 currently not in foal.

My scam alarm went off. PAPERS?? Really?? Not a photo of the horse? Now what could these folks want with all of these photocopies of TB papers?

I think it's more like trying to get horses across borders or otherwise sell them with false identities... it just doesn't smell right.

I was joking, most likely that horses are being taken to a slaughter house and if someone then tries to trace a horse then it turns up alive on your farm.

Maybe that's it. Whatever it is I want NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

Horse owners beware if you get a call like this.

Don't supposed you have caller ID for the Alberta person do you? I live in Alberta, I'd be interested in following this up.
