mares and stallions that never raced

Postby 3nutmeg » Thu Apr 18, 2013 8:38 pm

I've heard a lot of people say that you should only breed horses that have performed well on the track. Can you name mares and stallions that have never raced and have produced outstanding offspring? Any that did poorly? Out ran their pedigree?

Fairy King brother to Sadler's Wells, one start. He wasn't too bad as a stallion.

I've seen him at Coolmore, attractive horse.

La Troienne wasn't exactly a racing success.

The outstanding stallion Alibhai -sire of Kentucky Derby winner Determine, good sire Traffic Judge, good mares Royal Hostess, Floral Park, Flower Bowl, etc.

The outstanding mare Silvery Swan (dam of El Corredor, Roman Ruler, Maimonides & Silver Tornado)
A difference of opinion is what makes horse racing and missionaries.

that Imperial Dance that I just bought ran one race and earned $130 bucks at Monmouth -

she is bred in the purple - her grand dame is Ballade who produced Devil's Bag, Saint Ballado & others

Her sire was not much as a stud - her foals have sold for 25k, l5k & l0k for a welch pony cross -

Will she produce a stakes winner? who knows but I thought she was worth the gamble -

will let you know

Interesting website, though a bit hard to read.

They start off with the statement of, "Reality vs. Myth: Racing Sucess-Not a necessary provision for a superb sire." Not sure of the terminology for that type of claim they make, but hard to argue against it as it is not absolutely necessary for a stallion prospect to have been a high class racehorse.

Then they cherry pick examples to back up their claim.

Nureyev: Only raced three times, but a group III winner and clearly the best horse in the 2000 guineas.

Mr. Prospector:A well bred & high priced yearling that did win half of his races. He was a listed winner and Graded stakes placed. With his race record and being a son of sire of sires Raise a Native, of course he was going to get a chance at stud.

Danzig: I will give them that one.

The list goes on with several other top sires that didn't win a graded/group race. To me they seem to imply these horses came out of nowhere to be top sires. Their arguements seem to be disingenuous to me.
