Monitor had the best finish for a gelding in the Belmont Stakes prior to Creme Fraiche's 1985 victory, running second to Spendthrift in 1879. Good job by Joanna McManus for coming up with that one. A new trivia question is now ready and waiting! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Joanna McManus got three of five on my little "Animal Companions of the Rich and Famous" quiz, tagging Freckles the cat as the companion of Funny Cide, Steamboat the pony as Seattle Slew'a sidekick, and Charlie Potatoes the dog as a companion of Kelso. As for the other two, Barry the terrier was a buddy to Man o' War, while Pete the rooster was a companion of Damascus. The last trivia challenge question for 2020 is now ready and waiting! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

The first trivia challenge of the New Year is now up in "Hoofprints" (http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints). Answers to the last challenge of 2020 can be found on the comments on the post.

No one got the answer to last week's trivia question. The horse I was looking for was City Zip, who was moved from New York to Kentucky because of his half brother Ghostzapper before his first foals ever ran. City Zip went on to rank three times among the top 10 stallions on The Blood-Horse's general sire list. A new trivia question is now ready and waiting! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Janet Moe correctly identified Fairway as the horse who lost the 1928 Derby Stakes after being mobbed by his adoring fans ---that's a little much for any racehorse's nerves to take! Anyway, a new trivia question is now ready and waiting! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Janet Moe got the answer to last week's trivia question. As suggested by the winner of an essay contest. the champion mare Beldame was bred to two-time American champion sire Meddler, producing Ballot Bred (originally named Consensa), who produced the useful sire Bistouri. A new trivia challenge is now ready and waiting! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Kevin Horgan was first across the line with Siberian Express as the answer to last week's trivia question. A new challenge is now posted and awaiting all comers! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Joanna and Janet Moe were one-two across the finish line last week, only two minutes apart. Both correctly identified Dick Welles as the Midwestern star who was the namesake for a line of cigars and who was named for inventor Richard Welles, father of Hollywood actor and director Orson Welles. A new trivia question is now ready and waiting! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

I'm surprised no one checked in with the answer to last week's question. The Kentucky Derby winner and the sibling that won a race on the same Derby's undercard were 1991 victor Strike the Gold and his full brother Greydar, who won the allowance that ran right after the Derby. Anyway, a new trivia question is now ready and waiting. http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Last week's question also seems to have been a stumper. It was Roy and Gretchen Jackson's Lael Stables that had a monster weekend as breeder of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro and 2006 Two Thousand Guineas winner George Washington, both of which died as the result of on-track injuries. A new trivia question is now ready and waiting at http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints.

Krista was correct in identifying Old England as the first California-bred to win the Preakness Stakes; he took a New York-based edition of the race in 1902. A new trivia question is now ready and waiting. http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints
