No trivia question this week, folks, as I can't get into the website right now. Enjoy your Breeders' Cup weekend, and we'll be back at it next week, I hope.

It took some clarifying on my part, but Frost came up with the answer I was looking for to my last trivia challenge: Lamb Chop was the first horse raced at Santa Anita after the modern plant opened in 1933 to be granted the honor of burial at the track. A new trivia challenge is now ready and waiting! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Sara D. galloped in first in this week's trivia challenge; indeed, I think she may have set a time record between the question's posting and the provision of its solution! It was Avelino Gomez who got a death threat advising that he would be shot dead off his Queen's Plate mount, Victoria Park, if he didn't comply with an extortion demand. Gomez turned in a winning ride in spite of any nerves. A new trivia question is now ready and waiting! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Janet Moe nailed last week's challenge, naming Alfred Vanderbilt as the lucky owner of two-time American champion fillies Bed o' Roses (1949 2yo filly, 1951 handicap female) and Next Move (1950 3yo filly, 1952 handicap female). A new trivia challenge now awaits at http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints.

Frost nailed last week's question with Groovy, who became the first horse to post a 130 or better Beyer Speed figure when he posted a 131 BSF in the 1987 Roseben Handicap. Sara D gets an honorable mention for guessing Groovy in the 1987 True North Handicap. That was Groovy's very next outing after the Roseben, and he posted a 134 BSF in that race. Smokin'! Anyway, a new trivia question is now ready and waiting at http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Janet Moe took the honors for last week's question, identifying Nearco as the champion sire who ran off 10 stud grooms in 10 months before Ernie Lee became his lifelong caretaker. A new trivia question is now ready and waiting. http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Jennifer Kelly was right there with Silky Sullivan as the horse who had his own pre-Kentucky Derby radio show. Well done!

In honor of the holidays, there will be no trivia question posted tonight or on New Year's Eve. See you in 2022.

Krista nailed the "name's the same" question with Creator, a name that was registered for a 2013 American-bred colt by Tapit (2016 Belmont Stakes, USA-G1), a 1986 English-bred colt by Mill Reef (multiple G1 winner in France), and a 1979 South African-bred colt by Buffo (a G1 winner in that country). David Miller galloped in at high speed with the answer to last week's question: it was Kentucky Oaks winner Farda Amiga and Brazilian-born trainer Paulo Lobo that had Brazil celebrating when Farda Amiga scored her Classic win. Between them, Lynn S. and Janet M. aced the "foodie" challenge last week.

Pickled cabbage = Chou Croute, U.S. champion sprinter (Lynn)
Spinach = Epinard, U.S. champion older male (Lynn)
Garlic = Ajo, Gran Premio Nacional/Argentine Derby (Janet)
Peppermint = Pippermint, Argentine Quadruple Crown winner (Janet)

Well, I got schooled on this one thanks to Janet M., who came up with 2011 American champion steeplechaser Black Jack Blues. I was looking for 1985 American champion Precisionist but had forgotten to look at the jumpers.

Even confining the discussion to the Flat, Janet also had an interesting point in picking 1989 American champion turf female Brown Bess. Brown Bess, you see, is descended in direct male line from St. Simon. Now, officially, St. Simon is a male-line descendant of Eclipse, but information that came out in 2017 (see https://www.bloodlines.net/highflyer/investigation11.htm) makes it appear pretty likely that a mistake was made in recording St. Simon's ancestry some 6 or 7 generations back and that he in fact is a male-line descendant of Herod, which would throw quite a sizable kink in the world's stud books. I'll have to put a note on this on his profile at American Classic Pedigrees.

Anyway, a new trivia question has been posted! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Madelyn and Janet M. both pegged Vindication as the winner of the only 9-furlong edition of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, this at Arlington Park in 2002. A new trivia question is now ready and waiting! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Krista was first past the post on last week's question with Canadian champion Canadiana, identified by artist Richard Stone Reeves as "the ugliest horse, stallion or mare, that I have ever painted." A new trivia question now awaits! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Janet M. aced last week's trivia question with 1938 English champion 2yo male Foxbrough, who in 1943 was given as a gift to Mexican president Manuel Avila Camacho. A new trivia question is now up at http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints.
