A new weekend trivia question is now posted! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints
"A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher...You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse." C. S. Lewis

Krista got last week's trivia challenge by naming Scatter the Gold as the horse that took his only two wins in two-thirds of a North American Triple Crown series (in Canada, of course). Unfortunately, lightning took out my router on Friday and I've only just gotten back on-line, so another trivia question will have to wait for next Friday. Sorry, folks.

Janet M. nailed last week's trivia question, identifying Distorted Humor as the horse who inherited an American freshman sire title after the horse who seemingly finished first (Elusive Quality) dropped to third because of disqualifications handed down against his son Elusive City on January 15 of the following year.

Looks like last week's question was a stumper. The great Citation won a total of 16 stakes races in 1948, the most in a single calendar year by any American racehorse, His runner-up in this category is Gallant Bob, who won 14 stakes races in 1975. Remember, I didn't specify that these races be consecutive, just within a single calendar year. Anyway, a new trivia question is now ready and waiting! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Krista zipped right in there with the answer to last week's trivia challenge, identifying City Zip as the last horse to sweep Saratoga's three big juvenile races (the Sanford Memorial, the Saratoga Special, and the Hopeful Stakes). Joanna McManus nailed last week's trivia question, identifying Dwight D. Eisenhower as the former president who made a trophy presentation at an American Triple Crown Race; this was at the 1961 Belmont Stakes, to Sherluck and jockey Braulio Baeza. To Baeza's surprise and delight, Eisenhower spoke in Spanish, which he had learned during service in the Panama Canal zone.

Avalyn, I did my undergrad studies on the American Federal Executive (with lots of focus on Eisenhower's guiding America into post-war prominence) ... and afterwards spent several years doing Thoroughbred racing research (including writing a couple of articles about Baeza's greatest mounts) ... and never came across that fact about Ike/Baeza/Belmont. So cool! Thanks for entertaining and educating!

Glad you enjoyed the Presidential trivia, then!

Looks like last week's question was a stumper. The mare who foaled two daughters who set world records at the same track is Caddie Griffith. Her daughter Calisse set a world record for 3-1/2 furlongs and her daughter Pan Zareta set a world record for 5 furlongs, both at Terrazas Park, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Anyway, the new trivia question is now up! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

Krista correctly identified champion Abel Tasman as the filly who lost her dam to complications of foaling, had to be resuscitated herself, and was raised by a nurse mare. A new trivia question is now ready and waiting! http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints

No one came up with the answer to the trivia challenge on September 9. The answer is Roamer, whose August 21, 1918, mile in 1:34-4/5 at Saratoga was the last official American time record to be set in an officially sanctioned time trial.

While I've enjoyed providing the trivia challenge, I'm finding it too much to keep up with at this time with not one but two books in the works, and so the trivia challenge will be going to the sidelines. (In case you're wondering, the second book will be on the history of the Kentucky Oaks and will also be put out by the University Press of Kentucky; we're hoping to get that one out in the spring of 2024 to coincide with the 150th running of the Oaks.) So, many thanks to those of you who have enjoyed the trivia challenge over the years. Don't worry about the rest of the site; I will continue to add pages to American Classic Pedigrees as I can squeeze them in, and "Mares on Monday" will continue in the "Hoofprints" blog.
