Thank you so much for rescuing Baron. I'd hate to think of him living his last days in that condition. Some folks make you want to wack'em upside the head with a full bedpan.

The clause about the prior owner getting to take any foals that have the same markings is a hoot. His markings are bay brindle. His odd colored foals are marked like classic roans, and are not marked like Baron.

Thanks for rescuing the fine old gentleman.

From what I gather from talks with genetic experts he isn't likely to ever pass on his stripey coloration. What is valuable about him is his ability to produce roan looking and producing foals. To get around that clause I'd offer him at public stud. Then you wouldn't own any stripey foals!! But include a clause in THEIR contracts that you get first refusal or partners in any roan foals. it would be nice to take some DNA samples from him from different areas (like his bay and his white stripes, blood, tissue, etc) to see what is going on there. It would be a shame to lose that roan coloration.

There is a warmblood stallion Natal Clasi who is like his twin and they oddly enough share a common ancestor (through Fair Trial I think, they both have sons of Fair Trial in the bottom line in almost the same place). I thought it was kind of odd for two stallions on two different continents to have a common ancestor and look so much alike! (he was from South America but is in FL now).

Dear Brumbyjil,

May the Good Lord Bless you very dearly.
When I read your thread recalling your non-coat-colour motivation and interest in saving Catch A Bird I came to the conclussion that you were really inspired and chosen to take good care of him. Good care is what he was really needing and that is the more important part here. Thats the reason why you were chosen by the Almighty.

We all appreciate your devoted efforts in pro of his well-being. Keep on the good work.

But please please just keep this in mind: if there is any new chance to breed from him again using a non-white-marked mate, please don't miss such a privileged opportunity. The authentic Roan (R gene) coat colour was one of the originating coat colours among the Thoroughbred breed. But that was during the 1700's and after that the colour vanished from the Breed due to lack of luck and lack of interest in preserving it. Now you may have the privilege of re-inserting this colour into the Thoroughbred breed. I know that Catch A Bird sired 4 roan cases but unfortunately all have vanished from the public and their status is uncertain.

I sincerely wish you all the Best.

Thanks for all your comments.

just to confirm this what she made me sign was that any form of striping roaning or ticking and she had the right to come and assess if she thought it was something she wanted. I had an all out fight one day over the phone with her and she backed off and said that i would be allowed half the ownership and i thought #$*#*#* no one is going to take anything from me that i have poured money into from both sides so is kinda just easier not to try and have a foal but I cant help it if he jumps a fence and finds himself fertile!!!!!

cheers

I would assume if anything she would have to reimburse the money you have into the foal. She would not be able to just take it.
Is her contract even legal?

Yeah she shouldn't be able to take anything without giving a fair market value for it. These aren't dogs with the pick of the litter option. But her clause wouldn't cover outside mares' foals. So that would be the way to go. Any idea where his roan offspring (and theirs) are now?
