Can someone explain the genetics that lead to a black horse. I noticed that Painting Shadows had a third dam listed as black. Playfellow is listed as bay, but has both parents shown as dark bay or brown. (Which means that one or both of them could have been black.) I had seen Playfellow in person, and he seemed a dark bay to me.
Will two black horses, with no recessive chestnut gene, automatically result in a black foal?

Sunday Silence,
I still have a photo of Gato Negro, if you want it- I had saved it to show a friend of mine looking for a grey TB. He looks more like a grey roan to me, and does have some dappling.
Months ago, CANTER listed a filly that was BLACK- she was from somewhere other than NE and was on the NE site barely a week, if I remember correctly. Maybe PA? She was the most black TB I've ever seen, ink black like a Freisan... wish I could remember her name for you!

Sure, I would like to see what Gato looks like. Thanks.
Though not a Thoroughbred, look at how black this Arabian stallion is

[quote="chiggins6"]As I know nothing, will a "true" black stay black all its life, and will it retain its black color even in the sun?
Is there a difference in skin color between a bay and a black?
Also - were any of the horse who played "The Black" in the movie The Black Stallion thoroughbreds? I am assuming they were like andalusion and ay-rabs, but I thought I would ask, since the topic is black and I like em, and am interested in black TBs, a little bit.

Cass Ole was the main actor who portrayed The Black, and he was a registered Arabian. For scenes involving water, Andalusians were used.

There are several horses listed as black in the Placed/Sold listings of NE Canter. Take a look at Chez Black, #755, sire and dam were both dark horses. What do you think about In Two Notes #828? Also Struggle His Luck #837 is listed as black.....he has socks though. I though that the only white that a black horse could sport was on it's face? I know I saw this on another site, to lazy to look back ( Must be all those carbs in the christmas cookies I ate today making me tired) What is the JC definition of Black?

I'm looking at the sold listings right now on the CANTER NE site... they list Moe's First Effort as "black", yet the textbook description of his color that I've always known it to be is "seal brown"- he has lighter brown points, which is especially noticable in the stifle area... true black horses, according to those same textbook definitions, are pure black all over, including the stifle area and muzzle.
Is seal brown not a recognized color in the TB registry?

Struggle His Luck and Alymir I would say are true blacks... Chez Black's stifle area looks like it could contain brown hairs (that "twitchy" skin area), but it could also appear lighter because of the sun... bright day when the photo was taken.
Code Found- definite seal brown- you can really see the area I was pointing out with Struggle His Luck.
Without looking it up, I always thought that white markings are acceptable (without changing the color classification) as a blaze, star or snip, and white on the legs can range from a coronet band to almost knee high- any white over the knee can qualify the color/horse as a paint, as does any white markings that spread or cover around the eye or around the nostrils...?? That's what I remember, anyway!
