No, it isn't. But they are there, because AT LEAST there is a small safety net for a lucky few, for those who will make the effort to even avail themselves of it.

Again...your tone suggests that we should just keep the status quo because too many things are not perfect, to make the changes COMFORTABLE and cost free.

Yes, lets all donate now for the mares fund, when some of us were going to the sale to purchase some of those mares. But, with all the hoopla, now I doubt that that is a possibility. This is all so ridiculous.

Raising a fuss such as this, is not helping the industry at all.

Were you going to the sale to purchase these mares to retire them to your farm? Or breed them again? I dont understand what is ridiculous about trying to find a retirement for older mares. This "hoopla" could have just stirred the attention of a possible owner who could provide a nice life for one of these mares. Maybe (just maybe) there ARE people out there with the means to provide a good life for a older mare or stallion who has given there lifes to a sport, and they won't be forgotten.

Been a bit under the weather but wanted to provide the update-

We have been assured by a representative of the owners that all of the mares have been placed privately. There was a great deal of interest in the mares, and especially moreso after the discussions of many on-line. The offer from the KY Equine Humane Center remained in place although one of the mares (Mepache) found a wonderful home in Oka., - two others we were told are to remain (to retire) and the rest dispersed to individuals that expressed interest. We all do believe this report to be sincere, and therefore are thankful for the show of responsibility towards these older gals.

And again, lets not forget, that an email had been circulated amongst rescue organizations/placement facilities back on Nov. 16, 2006 in an effort to forego the need to have entered them in the first place, but it was to no avail.

It wasn't circulated very far unfortunately, it didn't appear on a single TB or general rescue list/board/group I am on. When things like this come around please crosspost them to be sure more people see them. I doubt that this would have been necessaryt at all (putting them in the sale) had more people just known about them. There ARE people out there who will take a retiree or two just because it is a nice thing to do.
