Linebreeding to Superior Females (Rasmussen Factor?)

Postby J.D. » Sat Nov 06, 2004 12:01 pm

Alright folks, give me your thoughts on the following:

Linebreeding back to Busanda 5X5 through the half-sibling brother and sister duo of Buckpasser (by Tom Fool) and Finance (by Nasrullah)? Personally, I like the fact that it results in a 7X7 to La Troienne. The resulting mating would also include a 4X5 to Round Table through his daughter La Mesa and his son Apalachee.

Any thoughts, suggestions and/or criticisms?

Best Regards,
J.D.

Any time your line-breeding 7X7 your watering down the breed. When you line breed 3X3 your not. Look at the pedigree of Light Jig, and Danehill. You will find line-breeding to the blue hen or foundation mare Natalma. Light Jig and Danehill are an example of line-breeding to superior female families.

If you want to get technical, it's not 7x7 to La Trioenne; it's 5x5 to Busanda. It's her genes which would be getting doubled. The problem with saying La Trioenne is getting doubled is that it could make the inbreeding look better than it is; especially if she happened to come through a weak source, though in this case the source is pretty strong (though not quite as strong as her granddam).

Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I thought Rasmussen Factor only applied to full siblings who are progeny of a superior female, and with one sibling in the top of the pedigree and one on the bottom. I also thought they had to be sex balanced, but I may be mistaken. Half-sibs, full brothers, or full sisters on top and bottom do not qualify as RF, but are only considered close linebreeding. If I'm mistaken, please set me straight.

Thanks,
Laurie

RF is about breeding to a common female within six generations. He sometimes makes a exception when there is full siblings within that six.

The "Rasmussen Factor" is defined as inbreeding (5 x 5 or closer) to a SUPERIOR female through different individuals, preferably in the same generation. The gender of the individuals is unimportant - sisters and half sisters qualify (Natalma and Cosmah), as do brothers and half brothers (Sir Gaylord and Secretariat). Inbreeding to any old mare doesn't qualify as a "RF" - the mare must be "superior."

There's also two other features of the "RF" - the "Delta Pattern" and "Formula One." The "Delta Pattern" crosses a full brother in male-tail position to a full sister in tail female position. This pattern need not fall in the same generation to qualify, and is worth noting even when it extends beyond the "RF" 5 x 5 or closer criteria. Afternoon Deelites has a "Delta Pattern" 7 x 6.

"Formula One" crosses sisters or half sisters in the tail-female positions of the sire and the dam. The nice stallion Georgia Crown (standing his first season in 2005) has an example of the "Formula One" pattern to Miss Carmie 4 x 4 through Chris Evert and All Rainbows.

For anyone who wants to see and example of a close up RF "Delta Pattern," take a look at my just bought mare, "Capable Miss." She has "Turn-To" 3rd generation tail male, and his full sister "Rope Yarn Sunday" tail female also in the 3rd generation.
Now I just need to breed her to a nice Turn-To line stallion and pray for a filly...

The Rasmussen factor must be within the first 5 generations and the inbreeding must occur top and bottom in the pedigree. Most often it is a duplicated female who is bred to different stallions but it can also be full brothers or sisters. Ashado is an RF who has Almahmoud top and bottom bred to different stallions.

Look at the breeding of our two foals (Palance Intrigue and Itbayammiv)
for formula one breeding.

Sending our mare to Rossini in 2005 for another one.

Linda from Texas,

Georgia Crown's dam has Fappiano (his son Unbridled combined with Caro in Red Bullet and Unbridled's Song) and All Rainbows (bred to Caro produced Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors).
