Prep Farms in Florida

Postby Worksoplad » Sun Jul 02, 2006 1:29 pm

I have four yearling colts (Street Cry, Distant View, Royal Academy, and Vicar) that are presently on the small farm in Kentucky where they were foaled and raised.

I am looking to move them around September 1st to an operation in Florida that specializes in getting young horses ready to race as two year olds. Ideally, I would hope that at least one of them will be an early type who will be ready to run at two at the end of the Hollywood Park/beginning of the Del Mar meet next summer, although, obviously I will take the advice of whoever is handling them on that score.

Does anyone have any recommendations, please?

Have heard good things from several people about Another Episode Farm in Ocala.

Thank's Sunday, I will check them out. I intend to draw up a small select list and try and visit them at the end of July.

Not Florida, but we had our two year old fillies at the Elloree Training Center in Elloree, SC, and I would recommend that facility highly.

sunrise stable south is pretty good also. Ed Colleti is the owner/operator. I have also heard very good things about Scanlon's place but I have never used him myself, so it is only second hand information that I have. Good luck.

McKathan family does excellent work from my experience. I believe Baffert uses and recommends them as well so I think that is a pretty good endorsement.

training facilities

Postby geowarrior » Sat Jul 08, 2006 1:01 pm

Depends whether you are training to race or for auction. One that has been recommended to me is Webster Training Center at Lambholm South at Reddick just outside of Ocala, Florida.

Many famous horses have trained there including Cigar, Azeri and St. Liam. The training surface is supposed to be excellent. However, my understanding is that the horses are brought along slowly for racing rather than quickly for posting fast times at auction, so it depends on what your purpose is for your yearlings.

It might be called Webster Training Center at Lambholm South (or whatever) today...but farm name aside, the common denominator with most of the TOP horses that ever trained over the track there is trainer Jr Serna. He trained for the farm's former owners the Slew crew (when the farm was called Wooden Horse Stud), and subsequently for leading breeder and owner Allen Paulson (the farm was then called Brookside South).

If trainer Jr Serna is still at the helm (at whatever that training facility is now called), he certainly has a resume (and track record) worthy of serious consideration...if the racetrack is the destination.

Respectfully

Hi Fos

Thanks for your reply. I did of course know about the 'Slew Crew' connection. I have just acquired a small share of two two-year olds that have been trained at that facility, I will check with my stable manager as to whether Jr Serna is still at the helm. I'll get back to you.

Fos - this is what I could find for the moment as I won't be able to contact my stable manager until Monday. The website is dated 2005, but quotes a March 2006 Thoroughbred Times article about St. Liam. As you can see, from the link, at least through that date Jr. Serta has still been involved in the operation.

So, how old, in months, should a TB fillie be before it is placed in race training?

I noticed that one member was taking her yearlings to a race trainer is September and thought that might be a tad early, unless of course they are are very early January 05 colts.
