Hey ya'll!

I have been lurking for some time now, and have learned so much from reading the posts on these boards. Thank you for everything you have taught me, without even knowing it.

I would love to learn more, about things like how to analyze a pedigree, and the business aspect of the sport. If ya'll can recommend any books or sources to add to my collection I would love it.

I will be graduating from college this spring (2007,) and planning to go to law school. However, I have been captivated by the TB industry, and am now considering either doing something with law and horses, or possibly just horses. I have ridden hunter/jumpers most of my life, and have gained some knowledge from trainers who owned racehorses, in addition to hunter/jumpers.

Thanks again
Jess

Welcome & congratulations on your academic accomplishments. This board has a wealth of information and experience to draw from. I would recommend "Matriarchs - Great Mares of the 20th Century" & "Great Thoroughbred Stallions", both authored by Edward L. Bowen. It gives a lot of insight to the origins and influence of Thoroughbreds in American Racing.

I guess you will be giving Darrell Vienna a run for his money in a few years (another lawyer that found his passion with thoroughbred race horses). Good luck!

Trainer Darrell Vienna passed the bar and was going to be in law for the rest of his life.
When he was away from the TB he realized his love of the horse was more than his profession in law.
Darrell is now a full time trainer as law will be put on the back burner.

Darrell Vienna's mother and my mother went to the same grade school.

Welcome aboard! And have a fantastic time in law school... education is very important, regardless of where other interests might take you in the future. So perhaps you could combine your interest in horses, as a part time occupation, while you pursue your degree.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I am gonna order the two books reccomended, "Matriarchs - Great Mares of the 20th Century" & "Great Thoroughbred Stallions," on ebay this evening. I was thinking about ordering Joe Taylor's book as well. Is that a book that provides accurate information? It seems very appealing, but I don't want to get it if its a waste.

If only I liked my textbooks as much as the books about thoroughbreds..

LMAO! You're telling my story! Eight years and three degrees worth of college and all I could think about were the horses!!! You'll know you're toally hooked when you find your framed diplomas displaced by your framed horse photos!

Good luck!

Welcome aboard!

Keep going with the education -- even if you go full-time into the horse business, it always helps to have something you can fall back on. Or, as Madelyn says, you may work a full time job in another field right now and pursue an interest in horses part time until you're in a position to make the break -- that's the track I'm on. Someday I will be a full time writer....someday I will be a full time writer....someday I will be a full time writer
