Hey ,I watched the video and believe me it was miniscule as the horse never even paid it much heed. If the jockey was a real asshole he may have jerked on his mouth or given him a swift kick in the belly to reprimand him but it was a wake up call and yes I know that he had a helmet on but horses heads are granite and you will always lose in a battle, speaking as a veteran of one knockout and two concussions while leading racehorses around. We all love them but sometimes they can be 1200lb idiots and in need of a reminder...........go ahead and whisper to them if you want but a good scream will sometimes do a better job!

Depending on the horse, you don't even need to scream. A good emphatic just slightly higher than normal speaking without being a yelled "ARE YOU THROUGH?" gets the point across.

I was lunging an arab one time who was being a BIG goof. Three steps at a jog, two at a canter, throw head, crow hop twice then buck ... lather, rinse, repeat.

Third time he did the crow-hop/buck thing, he twisted his back end toward me in mid-air ... and came RIGHT DOWN on the line, dragging it across his nuts and scared the hell out of himself. Jerked the line right out of my hands (and me right off my feet .. girlfriend even managed to get a picture of me in mid-flight and I was perfectly horizontal), blew through the gate and ran up to his pen.

He had his poll level with his whithers when I got there. Stopped about 5 feet from him, crossed my arms and glared at him then asked him if he was finished. He dropped his head even further. "Get over here." He followed me all the way back to the pen and went about his business with this "oh man, I F*CKed up bad and ma's pissed." Spent 30 more minutes where he was a perfect attentive gentleman and when I let him stop, he hung his head and walked over to me to nuzzle my thigh.

No one will ever be able to convince me these things don't know when they screw up or understand when their human is torqued.

I want to hear more about the caution the jock got for using his whip in the race.
I don't know why the stewards are going to launch an inquiry. Maybe it's just to appease the non-horse people who don't understand the "horse language" that was going on. I've been headbutted by more horses than I can count because they were irritated with me.

I defently agree with this statment. A whisper never got me anywhere when a horse was being bad. Yelling a big "HEY" has worked pretty good for me, gets their attention and seems to do the trick, but Sam, you are also right about different things working with different horses.

If you look at the video, the jockey butted his helmet into the horses nose. Jockey-boy need's to control his temper if he want's more rides.

When I read the statement about the steward's were looking into use of the whip, I figured the jockey was still pissed.

We have one mare that when she's in heat, she talk's none stop. That's fine in the pasture, but she know's that I'm gonna get after her if we're some place else. All I have to do is raise my voice and tell her to mind her manner's, she shut's up.

We have a gelding that smashes into things harder than that head butt all by himself and he could care less. There are worse off horse's to worry about, ie. slaughter bound.

Sorry guys ... I've been headbutted AND body slammed by an 18 month old clydesdale when I was 14. That little love tap by the jockey meant nothing to the horse ... especially since it barely flinched and had a "Are you CRAZY? I only outweigh you by like a thousand pounds" look after the fact.

AP on the Bighorse list put it this way, and I hope he won't mind me quoting him without explicit permission:

*It was obvious from the outset that the horse was trying to wind the
jockey up. He was being unruly in the parade ring and being
uncooperative going down to the start. Also when the jockey fell off
he staggers back away from the horse and at that moment the horse
probably insulted his mother and sister or said something about the
jockey's ethnic background. The other thing that is not clear is
whether he did actually headbutt the horse. To me he looks like he
was trying to kiss it and being a bit disorientated after the fall he
forgot he had his cap still on.

Had it been an Italian horse it would have rolled around the ground until the vet scratched it , then got up and jogged away.

Surprised the horse didn't sit on the bench and cry a la Beckham....
