very funny thing anyone ever had something similiar?

Postby sstacy19 » Mon Oct 16, 2006 6:46 am

Ok it is really weird and a bit comical. My Mare Twister has a thing where she pees every time I am around her...I am not kidding, a couple of months ago I thought she absorbed her foal and was back in season. Ok it doesn't matter if it is night feeding, morning feeding watering or turnout she will see me and Pee. (Always in her stall though never after turnout) What the?? Anyone out there have anything even close? What does it mean in the Horse language thing? I am totally at a loss..

How funny you should post this! I thought it was just something one of my mares did! I have one like that.....in the morning, when I go out to feed, as soon as I'm walking towards her with the bucket, she parks out and urinates. Then, she's whickering and ready to eat. Doesn't matter what time it is, she just does it when it's time to eat. But not every time she sees me. If it's not feeding time, and she sees me, she tries to herd me around so that I'll scratch her for a half hour or so!

:D

But too funny on the peeing thing. I would love to see others' comments and ideas.

Maybe it's time for DEPENDS for horses.

We had a gelding which was trained to void only in his stall. He would be turned out all day and save everything up until stalled, then he would flood it. Anytime you entered the barn he would urinate, so that is how he was trained. We finally got him to go outside by putting some pine shavings in his run.

I remember as a kid the grooms always whistled whenever a young horse urinated. Supposedly, it made it easier to collect the post race sample. Pavlovian response?

I try to train my young horses to void before we bring them in for dinner. Some learn, some don't. Stall maintenance is much easier for the ones that do!

I know a girl in CA who keeps two geldings on a small lot. She has trained them to urinate in a drain by tying them then rewarding them with treats. Now every time they see her they run over to the drain so they can get their treat.

It sounds like your mare has come to associate urination with positive reinforcement from you or due to past training.

zinn21, I don't blame him. How would you feel if they woke you up before dawn, threw a kid on your back who beat on you with a whip, and then hosed you down with cold water?

On a serious note, you really ought to mention that to your vet. Some of my horses are very careful to let me know when something is bothering them, and it seems like she's trying to get your attention. Is the urine creamy colored or clear? Horses can normally have creamy colored urine, but it can also indicate infection. Or she may have an internal sore or a kidney problem, and she's trying to get you to notice that it bothers her.

All of my horses will pee in a clean stall as soon as I bring them in. I'm positive it is because they don't like the splash on their legs and they like to go into the absorbent bedding. This sounds like she will turn and urinate even in a paddock. It might only be hormonal, but I think it's worth investigating medically.

My two female cats do the exact same thing, as soon as the see me they run to the litterbox. What's up with that?

My 2 mares also do the same. They pee in unison as soon as they see me walk up to the gate. Yikes! Well, I'm a girl too so I'm not sure if I should be offended. It's also a bit embarrassing when I bring friends over.

But strangely my dog also does this on a rare occasion when he gets really excited about seeing a visitor. I wonder if it just means they're excited/happy.

That's what I think. My mare is fine - very vetted, also very pregnant. I think she's just happy to see me. :) She herds me and whickers for back and belly scratches. I like that because I can feel the foal move. She's also the alpha mare. She knows when I come out in the morning, she's the first one I get to and I think it excites her. In a happy way of course.

My ex-wife used to do that.

Never feed a board of mostly women those kinds of lines  I have half a dozen comebacks on that one myself!

Anyway...my gelding, who adores me, does the same thing. I can talk to him by phone and get him to do it

I have a mare who has always done that at feeding time- I just thought it was an "out with the old, in with the new" sort of thing!! Just wish she would move a little farther away from the gate before she lets loose!
