How is the breeding season going for you?
I have always heard that if one farm is having blank everyone else is having blank as well. This year it seems our vet has had a lot of twinning as have our own mares and it seems to be the year of the fillies. We are up to 28 fillies and 14 colts
A farm I visited yesterday had around 26 fillies and 9 colts.
Is this the general consensus?

Hi Mood Swings,
Well only foaled clients mares so far and had one colt and one filly. The mare who had the filly has had 5 foals all fillies to date. The colt was from a maiden. Have bred 2 this year of my own. One confirmed in foal, one not but she was rebred. The one not in foal is an AI'r and she didn't go in foal last year. Got fet up so sent her to stud to be cross covered and stitched. My vet said she didn't need stitched even though I thought she might need to be, anyway vet down there feels she won't go in foal without a stitch. Sorry that was boring. One confrimed pregnancy on the farm I live that, and that's twins. She is having one pinched tonight. This mare has never twinned before. In another couple of weeks my mares will be foaling.

Twinning?
Seriously, alot of twinning??? Were these mares ultrasounded and just missed? Or??? That's always my worst fear, that something like that would happen to my mare...tell me more about the details!
Thanks!

I don't think Moodswings means that a lot of mares are delivering twins, but on the initial ultrasounds to check for pregnancy, the mares are carrying twins. One will need to be pinched off.
All men are equal on the turf - or under it.
Is anyone else finding mares are carrying very very late and the open mares are still cycling irregular as well. It may just be our weather, but I have had mares carry as much as 6 weeks overdue and mares due early April still dont have full bags...nothing in my feeding program has changed so thats not the issue.
I am having issues getting all my mares in foal this year and my vet who is a repo specialist and the best around here (not just MY opinion either) said he is having problems everywhere! We only bred one mare at our farm this year - had to send her to KY twice to be bred - she carried that freaking follicle forever - the vet was freaking out
She is confirmed in foal and we were fortunate that the farm let us bring her back a few days later for a second cover on the same heat cycle. The mares in KY are just not taking this year for some reason. Had some covered three times (UGH) - some are confirmed at 15 days and I'm keeping my fingers crossed - one was bred last week and the other one gets checked this coming Friday. Sent one off last week to foal. I think the mares are confused - warm sunny weather than snow and ice in April - they're saying okay time to go to work - then no ummmmm maybe not time to do our thing yet
Foal count for me so far - 3 colts and 1 filly - and one due in May. That's the Toccet out of the Seattle Slew mare - I'm just praying for a live foal
and will take what I can get!

Yes, we had one of our (NY) mares go five weeks over. Our NY mares that foaled on time were the ones that were supposed to be early (Jan. due dates). Everything after that was late. On the plus side the NY group has gotten in foal on one cover but the KY group is taking a lot of tries. Not sure why...even the maidens in NY caught on one cover.

We have not had the most succesful start in getting our Canadian mares in foal either. We have had four mares that have had to be covered twice and one that is getting covered for a third time

Hi Amy,
Exactly what Intristic Worth said
"People come and go but horses leave hoofprints on your heart"
Thankfully my final mare of three due delivered last night. The first mare was 2 wks late, and the other two right on time. Two single colts and one single filly, easy deliveries.
All four except the newest mom are already bred, with one confirmed pregnant for a February foal. Others have news pending, but wouldn't be due to deliver before late March to mid-April. One failed to produce an effective follicle until 60 days after foaling and an open mare was slow to cycle. Other two cycled easily, one was open and the other on foal heat. Hopefully this current new mother can be transported to KY for stallion service on foal heat for chance of producing April foal, as she had an easy delivery.
