Better than Honour progeny

Postby sndral » Mon Jun 11, 2007 7:34 pm

Any thoughts about the whys of which sires Better than Honor (1996) has been bred to?
What I've gleaned from other posts and pedigree query:
2001 Teeming, filly by storm cat, 4 starts, 3 wins injured in stall, no progeny
2002 Magnificent Honour, filly by AP Indy, unraced, no progeny
2003 Jazil, colt by Seeking the Gold (Mr. P.)
2004 Rags to Riches, filly by AP Indy
2005 Casino Drive colt by Mineshaft (AP Indy) - I read she was sold in foal w/ this colt
2006 ? by Giants Causeway (storm cat)
2007 ? by Giants Causeway (storm cat)
2008 in foal to storm cat
She is the only mare to foal 2 belmont winners, right?

the why's? Simple. They're the top tier stallions both on the track and commercially of today.

Magnificent Honour was sent to Australia I believe as a yearling and then brought back as a broodmare prospect last year after Jazil won. She sold for 900k or around that amount. She actually was a little bit of a wreck. She looked better as a yearling and weanling.

Teeming was magnificent looking as was Rags, which is part of the reason they sent her back to Storm Cat even though Teeming didn't earn blacktype. The one knock against Teeming was that she was a little on the small side... 15'2 or so 15'3.

Jazil was a very feminine foal and on the small side as well, as are a lot of Seeking the Golds (he, himself is smaller than advertised). He had a lot of quality about him but you would guess he was a filly from afar.

Casino Drive was a result of convenience and market appeal. Better Than Honour was at Lane's End farm when she was bred to Mineshaft and they were cutting big stud fee breaks for mares of great quality.

And yes, she's the only mare to produce two Belmont winners.
Don't be so humble - you are not that great.

Thought I'd bump this - after Rags won the Belmont last year, I became very interested in her dam - and I knew Casino Drive was in Japan and was thrilled when he won in his maiden there, and now that he's pointing to the Belmont - whoopee!
An update:
Teeming had a 2007 storm cat filly - named Cascading
Better Than Honour's 2006 Giant's Causeway is a colt named Man of Iron and her 2007 is a colt.
She was bred to A P Indy, not stormcat in'07 but aborted.
As a casual fan, every once in awhile a horse fascinates me, and Better than Honour is such a mare.

What I don't understand is the breeding they are doing with her now.
They know what works.
Seeking the Gold and AP Indy.
Why are they breeding away from the proven success of these crosses.
I say go back to them as much as they can.

If Casino Drive wins the Belmont, I believe she will become the only mare in history to have offspring win three Belmonts in a row!

Teeming had a 2007 storm cat filly - named Cascading

Cascading is listed in the data base as being by A.P. Indy.

If Casino Drive wins the Belmont, I think Better Than Honour will be the only mare to have 3 Triple Crown series winners on her pedigree page.

It is tough when any mare aborts as we all know but can you imagine how absolutely sick you would feel if you owned her (BTH) and she aborted the AP Indy?!

Oops on Teeming, thx xfactor (note to self, don't type late @ night, no matter how excited you are about Casino Drive.)
Wonder if they'll ever send her back to a Mr. P line stallion. I read she was going back to AP Indy this year, but why not Distorted Humor @ some point?

Not nearly so sick as I might feel if the AP Indy was born alive and got sepsis a few weeks later (after the stud fee was paid). The point is that it doesn't matter whether it's a hundred dollar mare or a million dollar mare. They are just susceptible to losing foals, and $$$. It doesn't matter what level you are playing at, the loss of any is devastating, emotionally and often financially.

I'm starting to think you can cross this mare with a clydesdale and still get a runner.

I'm also torn as to who I'd rather see win a 'triple crown', Big Brown or Better Than Honour - but lately I tend to find myself leaning towards the mare. DH for win too much to hope for?

Point is moot, of course, if BB tanks in the Preakness....

I actually like the idea of a clydesdale-Better Than Honor cross. The foundation mares of the thoroughbred breed were big carriage horses. Who knows. it might reinject some soundness and stamina!
