Help Research Thoroughbreds in Showjumping

Postby lucalucaluca » Sun Nov 25, 2007 1:52 am

Hello, I'm doing a research to find out the names and pedigrees of TBs that became really good sport horses (i.e. showjumping, eventing, even hurdles). I'm trying to find a common thread like bloodline, physical characteristic, that can make a throughbred into a great jumper. I'll be forever grateful if you can drop names and give me pedigree tips of the horses that can jump! I already know of Gem Twist...Thank you very much.

Furioso II, by Precipitation, was possibly the most important thoroughbred ever crossed onto sport mares in the middle part of the 20th century. He is a foundation sire for many warmblood breeds.

Busted (by Crepello) and his son Mtoto are also highly sought after for jumping.

On the west side of the Atlantic, Bold Ruler-breds are desirable.

In our country we know Abgar (v. Abernant) and Lucky Boy (v. Compromise). Also the German bred Ladykiller and the sire of Ramiro, Cottage Son. Also French bred Le Haar.

In my stallion's family, there was a top steeplechaser named Yaw. He was by Seattle Slew.

Not sure about this thoroughbred and whether he ever showed, but his offspring have most deffinately proved themselves, and he has been influenced the German Warmblood Breed from what I have read. I came across him while looking up my horse's pedigree.

Laudanum (my boy's grandsire) was an excellent TB grand prix horse who has sired quite a few very nice GP horses.

Wasnt the high jumping record for horses set by a Thoroughbred - at 8' or just over?
Someone posted a video on EMG a couple of years ago - took place in South American I believe.

Debbie (from the BB here) has a significant other who was very into researching an sporthorse blood lines especially TBs. The Nashrullah/Nearco ones were supposed to be very good although came with some temperment.

I'm not exactly sure what in her pedigree had them say it. But, when I posted my mares pedigree on Chronicle of the Horse, I was told she should be able to jump a house standing still. Great, since I don't jump, lol.

She's on the database Kiss My Asterisk

The online Horse Magazine in Australia is a very good source for all sport horse related questions.

How about Gold Fever.

NY stallion Gold Fever has unique November-double down under & over jumps
Source: Rab Hagin

Rarely within a week does a stallion have a major North American winner over jumps and another significant stakes winner on the flat in Australia , but that has happened with New York-based GOLD FEVER, standing at Dutchess Views Farm/Metropolitan Stud in Pine Plains under the management of Questroyal Stud, LLC. On Saturday, November 3, Gold Fever's six-year-old son Planets Aligned ($285,958) scored his third hurdle win of 2007 in the $100,000 Aflac U.S. Championship Supreme Hurdle Stakes at 2-1/4 miles at the Steeplechase at Callaway in Pine Mountain, Georgia, winning under co-topweight of 153 pounds. The homebred for the Fox Ridge Farm, Inc. of Peter Schiff of Syosset , New York also has four wins on flat turf at Saratoga (twice), Belmont , and Aqueduct. The chestnut gelding has been ridden in all of his hurdle victories by jump jockey Chip Miller under the guidance of trainer Thomas Voss.

A week later on Saturday, November 10, Gold Fever's seven-year-old Australian-bred son, Cat in a Hat, captured Australia’s 2,200-meter (about a mile and three-eighths) Ascot Gold Cup on turf by a length and three-quarters. Other stakes winners sired by the syndicated Grade 1 winner include graded-winning millionaires A Bit O'Gold ($1,788,256) and Gold Mover ($1,523,010) -- both of whom earned all or most of their bankrolls on dirt (although the former was a Canadian turf champion as well as Canadian Horse of the Year). Gold Fever (Forty Niner - Lead Kindly Light, by Majestic Light), who is currently one of New York's millionaire sires for 2007 (with 2007 progeny earnings approaching $1.25-million), has lifetime offspring earnings of almost $17-million. He has stood in New York since the 2003 breeding season, and his 2008 fee will be $3,500, live foal.

I can't find the original website anymore, but here is an archived copy of Dr. Pete Birdsall's article on thoroughbred lines in sport.

There was a great TB jumper re-named Touch of Class that won an Olympic gold medal with Joe Fargis. I can't remember what her JC name was, but she did run a couple of races without winning.

Stillaspill. Her dam, Kluwall, also produced Special Memories.

Idle Dice was a full TB. The last full TB to represent the US internationally was Anne Kursinski's Eros, an Australian TB. Night Murmur was by a stallion named Blue Murmur who produced hunters and jumpers. Top side was Blue Peter, and the Bottom side was Bonne Nuit, who produced the Twist line. It's speculated that the jump in that family comes from Bonne Cause, who is the French Dollar line.

Most of the USET horses in the 50's, 60's and 70's were full TBs. Abdullah was not, and Calypso was not, but most of the rest were.

Jumping has been found to be one of the most highly heritable traits in horses. It is concentrated in families.

The French Dollar/OmniumII/ Tourbillon line is one of the greatest producers of TB jumping horses. One of the great USET riders, but I forget which one, had a GP mare named something like Ksar D'esprit. But jumping talent is all through those horses.

The Man O'War line is famous for jumpers. Battleship was the first American bred, trained and ridden horse to win the Grand National at Aintree. Relic was used a lot in France for chasers, and Battleship produced three National chasing champions out of a very small crop at stud--maybe 60 horses.

Rock Sand is the horse who is thought to have transmitted jumping talent in the Man O'War lines.

Then there is Hampton, who with his descendants Teddy and Bay Ronald, is the founder of a long series of excellent sport horses, including almost all warmbloods except the Trakheners.

More modern are the horses that spring from Royal Charger, Nasrullah, Neartic and their descendants. Turn-To and Never Bend, for example. Most event horses are heavy on those lines these days. Mill Reef is a sire who was used a lot in France (and Britain?) and produced chasers.

Hoist the Flag is also good to find; he probably got his jump from Wavy Navy, who is Tourbillon line.

If you can find American horses with a mixture of the French lines and either Man O'War or the Nearcos, you've probably got a sport horse. Adding the Hampton lines just increases the odds exponentially.

Most of the currently popular US racing lines are not well thought of for sport horses. Irish, French, Australian and New Zealand TBs are sought after by eventers, in particular, because they still retain quite a few of the lines that haven't been "contaminated" by US sprint race breeding.
