Pembroke opinions

Postby Jean » Wed Jan 05, 2005 7:11 am

Am thinking of breeding a mare to him this year and would like opinions on him as a sire generally and what bloodlines work best with him.

He is found in KY for $1500 fee. His only graded stakes winner I can find is Testify, a gutsy gelding winner of over $500,000 as a turf sprinter. Most of Pembroke's progeny seem to be sprinter/milers. He has a poor stakes winning average of about 2%. Testify's dam is by Seattle Song, a son of Seattle Slew, and he also has considerable Princequillo in his ancestry.

What mares were you thinking of sending to him?

um, Blazing Wings a 2002 filly by Blazing Fire? She wasn't even in the db, I added her for you, but are you breeding to race?

I like Pembroke on paper with Blazing Wings, but I think you should use a sire with better history of production. Help us help you by telling us if you are breeding to race, and in what area? You could optimize your chances of profit if you get in on some of the good breeder's awards in many states. What is your stud fee limit, and do you plan to board out or keep them at home?

I have a fondness for Pembroke and with 66% winners from starters he is worth a shot if you are breeding to race. Sales on the other hand I think his commercial value is slipping.

I have a son of Pembroke's here at stud in NY "Not A Corgi" and we are aiming to breed him to mares that had distance pedigrees. The Pembrokes have a propensity to be speedballs in sprints. "Corgi" set a track record for 4.5f. and doesnt Pembroke hold a world record for 5f? The one variation we did make on this was to breed a daughter of Dehere to Corgi, hoping to get a quick horse, since the mare herself was a miler and void of early speed. So we are hoping to get a good mix with Dehere's speed and the Pembroke speed.

Gerry: This has nothing to do with horses, but EVERY SINGLE TIME I see your horse's name I get a flashback, so I thought I'd share.

I LOVE the name, by the way... from Pembroke to "Not a Corgi." I think it's cute as hell. When I was in High School I took a course known as "Vet Aid" for two hours/day my Senior year. One of the things we had to do was to learn every single AKC dog breed by sight. Our instructor had cute little "tricks" to help us with certain breeds... like Norwich vs. Norfolk Terriers (Norwich have the ears that stand up: "Which way'd they go?" etc.

Her trick for remembering Cardigan vs. Pembroke Corgis was that the Pembrokes had their tails "broke" off. Every time I see your horse's name I think of that and get a chuckle.

*laughs* Just because I can't resist a dog mention, and my own Corgi is flopped on the floor in between the big dogs...

I'll put in my two cents on Not a Corgi's name myself - I've always thought it was one of the cleverest names out there with regards to his sire.

As a matter of fact, his name came up the other day in a discussion with a friend; we both thought that this was a great example on how to run with a sire's name and give it a bit of a different twist. Just thought I'd pop in, and say that quickly, since the subject came up. :D

Too bad I already named the filly from his test crop! She looks just like him but her name is Tony's Starburst (named for my Dad who passed away suddenly last year) You can tell by looking at her that she is sprinter through and through.
