Sky Mesa
Anyone else in love with him? I cant help but get over this feeling he's going to be a monster stallion. Here's hoping since a Brahms 2 yo filly I have has a half sister ready to drop a member of his first crop.
Oh boy... I cannot wait to read Sam's reply to this one!
Sam? Sam? Pulpit is the best!! Pulpit is the best!!
Nicki, I actually do like Pulpit, he has a wonderful presence and is a nice specimen. However, the underlying fear with the Pulpits (and Sky Mesa) has less to do with looks, probably not much to do with talent, but more to do with soundness. I do hope the mare carrying that first foal has a history of soundness in the family.
On the other hand, as is often heard in this business, "... better to have a fast, unsound horse, than a slow sound one..." I think Sky Mesa will be well received, if the foals look the part. Will they be well enough received to make them profitable, on the whole; I don't honestly know.
Pulpit and Tiger Ridge are second only to Kissin Kris in Sam's book

You can't see it, but I'm flipping you off right now
Hey, at least I'm a realist when it comes to Kissin Kris as a sire ... the people cough suckers cough who breed to Tiger Ridge (and Pulpit to a lesser extent) clearly are not.
Actually, there's nothing pedigree wise that says Tiger Ridge couldn't become a big time sire ... and I don't recall ever saying I thought he would fail as one. I do recall HOPING he would ... but that's a whole 'nother issue.
You guys just need to remember that what I think, what I know and what I'm willing to concede to are 3 different things.
MY personal bitch with that horse is that he sets a bad precedent and should not BE at stud.
I have never and will never agree with sending a horse who:
Did not make his first start until he was 5yo
Only made 5 career starts -- both of which lead me to believe he had SERIOUS physical problems
Never broke his maiden
Never even got close to stakes quality horses let alone started in a stake himself (and I'm not even talking graded stakes -- this POS never even saw a cheap listed stake horse at Tampa)
... to stud. The ONLY reason this inbred (and I mean that in the "my daddy is my own grandpa" way) looking pig is at stud is because he is a Storm Cat half to AP Indy.
As for Pulpit ... he's just a damn fraud who gets lucky enough to stay on the fringes of everyones subconscious and refuse to look at his production numbers versus his sales figures/flash in the pan big horses.

eeeeeh ... I was on a roll last night. I'd been smacking Texas and his pet airhead around and find it difficult to gear down.
KAL wrote:Now... poor Nicki was asking about Sky Mesa... how do you feel about him?
Cheap, fragile, precocious speed from a smoke and mirrors, over priced, over hyped, fraud of a stallion who I still think is going to have his butt shipped out of Kentucky in 3 years ... ooooh baby, where do I sign up?

You can dislike his Pulpit all you want, but Sky Mesa was a good runner and his female family is tremendous. As a racehorse, Sky Mesa won all three races at two. At three, he was completely mismanaged, thrown into the Dwyer his first time out, then ran back in the Haskell, and they finally ruined him the next time out. But that won't prevent him from making it as a stud. His mother won 13 races and over $600,000. Both of her horses to run have been stakes horses. His second dam had 4 stakes winners and is a half sister to a champion, and his fourth dam is a half sister to Buckpasser.
I think that with the exception of Empire Maker, he has the best pedigree of any grade one winner that has retired in the last two years.

hi guys
WOW this topic is hot tonight...
...Sky Mesa is a POWERHOUSE individual with a BIG female family...that is by a stallion that is certainly better than adequate...although not consistently good enough to really fit-in (at least not yet) with the big-boys. But he does seem to come up with a pretty good one now-and-then...at least often enough to retain some reasonable semblance of quality support (in the breeding shed) and serious attention at the sales.
Intrinsic Worth wrote "By the way, have you seen him (Sky Mesa)? Wow, gigantic body on toothpick legs."
Although Sky Mesa has a look about him which creates the impression that he is grossly overfed...I am confident that Three Chimneys cares for him very well...he's probably one of those very easy-keepers.
Reality is...he's got plenty of bone...and a particularly strong (and quite short) cannon...and an equally sturdy pastern (excellent)...but I can understand how his body (which is VERY heavy and thick with muscle) can possibly create a misperception of his bone mass (which is actually quite good).
I cannot recall a young stallion with a more powerful shoulder and chest, and a wider...deeper...more heavily muscled set of quarters than Sky Mesa. He is thick from nose to tail.
I believe that pinhookers and racing aficionados alike will be all-over the Sky Mesas...and I suggest he could become quite successful.
Re: Tiger Ridge...very difficult to like. Take a look and judge for yourself.
Respectfully

I Ande I do think the first 2 crops of Sky Mesa will sell well. am becoming suspect of Pulpit and his sons. Sky Mesa won 2 stakes at 2, and no races at 3. Tapit won a stake at 2 and the Wood Memorial where he beat Master David and Eddington. He was unplaced in his other 3 starts at 3.
On the other hand, Stroll, another son of Pulpit, won 5 stakes at 2,3 and 4.
