Looks vs ability question

Postby Reviewer » Thu Jan 13, 2005 1:14 pm

Is there any studies that show any correlation between how much a foal looks like a particular ancestor and his racing ability? I realize this is a broad question as we can consider different ways that the foal can look like an ancestor.
In my more spefic question- can color and markings being nearly identical mean anything at all? To explain why I bring this question up. We have a newly turned yearling by Roar who is inbred 3x3 to both Northern Dancer and Glowing Tribute (through full brother and sister Heros Honor and Wild applause). As it turns out, the white markings on all 4 legs are nearly identical to those of Northern Dancers (as far as how high they go on each specific leg). His blaze on his face is almost identical as well. I would guess that the whole idea of inbreeding 3x3 was to get some of the characteristics of those particular ancestors- so it makes some sense that there are similarities. However, I was discussing this foal with someone and the question came up as to wether or not there could be any significance to his markings. Anyone have any thoughts?

I had a horse named South City Tan by the stallion Tanthem. My horse looked identical to his father! However he never ever won a single race! His breeder told me he was just like his mother on the inside and like his father on the outside. He was athletic as could be and went on to make a great hunter, but his head/heart was not in the races.

Thanks for the replies.

Southcitytan, I always find comments like yours interesting. I guess that means they come all different ways.
