Teariest Moment of 2008
There weren't many racing moments inspiring enough to bring tears, at least from me, in 2008. But Midnight Lute's win in the B.C. Sprint did. What a magnificent horse. I've been following him for years, and am a big fan of his sire Real Quiet.
Real Quiet was utterly underrated as a racehorse. He had a wagon load of racing heart, he had stamina, he raced until four. Yes, he may not have been the most imposing looking racehorse, but if you wonder whether a modern era horse can win the T.C. you only have to look at the Real Quiet/Victory Gallop duel to know that if not for Desormeaux, Real Quiet would have won it all. I'll never have any respect for Desormeaux again after I read his comments about Big Brown being the best horse he ever rode, and how all the 11 winners of the Triple Crown must have been real freaks (because Big Brown didn't win it). Real Quiet was the best horse Desormeaux ever rode. Real Quiet was the topic of my first thread on this forum, I believe.
Midnight Lute doesn't resemble Real Quiet at all, of course, he's his own horse. Sloppy conventional dirt and fast artificial track floored his back to back Breeders Cup Sprint wins, both visually highly impressive, and with a stakes record in the latter win off a terrible year to boot. Such an enormous horse, not what you would think of as a sprint body, but when that stride lengthened out he made good horses such as Fatal Bullet look as though they were galloping through molasses.
Yes, that second win was a teary moment for many reasons. As soon as Midnight Lute got out of the gate I knew he was going to win. There are very few racehorses I know well enough to evaluate how they come out of the gate, and I've never had that feeling after the start before. And that moment with the ears pricked as he passed the finish line.? A cliche, but .... priceless.

I've experienced a few tear jerkers this year. Some were good, some we not.

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.

I don't share share geowarriors feelings about Real Quiet because he was not a natural born athelete , had he not got major surgery to put his legs on straight he'd have been a claimer. Now people wonder why he's been such a failure at stud (genetically crooked as all hell for starters). Now that said he is underated as a racehorse and he did do good with Midnight Lute for sure.
How sad Shakis in his last race.
