Just got a new mare

Postby aurora » Fri Jan 21, 2005 8:38 am

I found this old gal at the Heritage Place sale & picked her up. Mistress Donna by Vigors. Remarkably, she has had a foal every year for the past 5 years (including this one) and will foal in February. I'm just toying with who would be a good cross, she produced a chanpion sprinter (Mexico) by High Brite but CA is too far away for me. I'm in OK. With just a cursory look at the breeding of some of the Vigors stakes horses, it seems I saw several crosses back to French horses....

Congrats! I saw her in the catalog and liked her and Vigors is one of my all time favorites. Best wishes with your new purchase!

Aurora, I'm not an expert so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I can tell you your mare and one of mine share some common ancestry in the French bloodlines, particularly through Goya (by Tourbillon) and I had some extensive pedigree research done on her. Here's what I can offer in the way of my 2 cents.

Mistress Donna's dam, Hayseed Honey, has strong influences of Marcel Broussac's Tourbillon through My Babu (sire's tail male line) and Goya (sire of her 2nd dam). Crossing Hayseed Honey on Vigors added the additional French line of Herbager (inbred to Firdaussi, et al) which has resulted in rich French influences for Mistress Donna. Mistress Donna's earnings of $82K+ (according to the database) indicate she was not a failure on the track, although not highly successful.

I think a consideration for bringing out the best in what your mare's bloodlines may offer would be a cross on the strong North American speed sire line of Mr. Prospector (especially over Nashua/Nasrullah) possibly with some Argentina influences. The "Intercontinental Triangle" of French refinement, South American soundess, and North American speed seems to be a key in breeding successful racehorses. This genetic combination created some phenominal athletes and producers in both South and North America. Look at Unbridled for an example. Lazy Lode(ARG), $1,296,740 in earnings and multiple US G1 wins, recently entered stud in New Mexico and is showing some strong possibilities as a sire based on the looks and quality of some of his first crops. Candy Ride(ARG) is another. Missy Baba, a daughter of My Babu -- who is a direct tail male ancestor of your mare's damsire (Jerry Crow) -- traces directly tail female to A. P. Indy under heavy Bold Ruler/Nasrullah bloodlines.

[BTW, Jellac may be interested in Jerry Crow's direct tail male line to Tourbillon.]

Breeding Hayseed Honey to Cannonade (Bold Ruler bloodlines) to produce Promenador might have been a step in the right direction, and crossing Promenador on Allen's Prospect produced Edgar Allen Pro, who although was not highly successful ($32,835), his record testifies to his soundness (144-13-8-13).

Because the intense French bloodlines in your mare are somewhat unique, I would suggest investing in having a professional pedigree analysis with stallion recommendations that could unlock the potential in her genetics, depending what you intend to breed for (commercial, breed to race, etc). It's money well spent considering what your future investment in stud fees will run. Barring that, the advice of some of our resident pedigree experts may also be very worthy of consideration.

Hope this helps.

Funny what the catelogue didn't show, there is a whole slug of blacktype horses under the 2nd dam Stormy Love including a GR1 winner in France and a champion miler in GER. I'm researching it today.

A.P. Indy,Seattle Slew,or Weekend Surprise line

Postby Keith » Fri Jan 21, 2005 4:45 pm

Aurora,

If I were you I would consider breeding to a son of A.P Indy and there is Almostashar who is by A.P. Indy-Destination Mir by Cherokee Colony and he is standing for $2,000 in Louisiana. There is Flatter in Kentucky for $5,000 and he is by A.P. Indy-Praise by Mr. Prospector. Malibu Moon at $17,500 is reasonable for him if you can get to him. Honor Glide a multiple Grade I winner is by a half brother to A.P. Indy being by Honor Grades and he is in Florida for $4,000. There is Indy Talent by A.P Indy-She's a Talent by Mr. Prospector. He is in Oklahoma for $1,000. Slew the Coup is in Oklahoma and he is by Seattle Slew-Evasive by Buckpasser. Gold Legend is in Texas and he is by Seattle Slew-Gold Beauty by Mr.Prospector. You may also want to consider Leestown who is by Seattle Slew-Bright Candles by EL Gran Senor. He is a half brother to Grand Slam standing for $2500 in Louisiana. If You look at Old Trieste who is by A.P. Indy-Lovlier Linda by Vigors and his second dam is by Crozier. He made $847,944. That may be an option going to an A.P. Indy,Seattle Slew,or Weekend Surprise line.

Keith makes a good point about Old Trieste pointing to AP Indy; also what Zialand said about getting a report on the mare from someone like George Smith.

What is your budget and are you breeding to race or sell?

Don't get confused on the names. Old Trieste is dead, but his brother New Trieste stands stud in Texas.

Hallo, Aurora,
I was surprised to see, you mention in connection with your new broodmare, an offspring of her tailfemale line, a horse by a German Champion sire. I tried to find out, unfortunately I had no success. Could you be so kind to tell me his/her name.
Thank you.

Best regards, Bettina

Hello Aurora,

Wow, Keith did a lot of research, but he forgot about the AP Indy son that I bred to and really like. He is Indy Mood and stands privately in Indiana. I am sure that you can get a better deal on his fee than those that were listed. I did. Good Luck.

STORMY LOVE is the dam of the Hail to Reason mare Esdee who is a multiple graded stakes producer. See her pedigree at http://www.tattersalls.com/cat/autumnhi ... dee%20dam'
