The Last Hyperion on Earth ?
Of course I am tinkering on a mild rainy evening in Florida and I was running through some pedigrees courtesy of this website when I came upon a mare named Lakewoods that I worked with on my first visit to Kentucky in 1985/86. She was at Melinda Smith's Pegasus Stud and was retired, aged 27 or 28 I guess. I was shocked to find that Hyperion was 27 when he covered her mother who may have been about 6 or 7 at the time. Lakewoods in turn threw the English 1000 guineas winner Waterloo, a super filly in her own right. Two things occurred to me; was she the last Hyperion alive and why on earth didn't I take a bunch of pics of this regal mare instead of one pitiful wintry scene of her munching hay at sunset?

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.
People place WAY too much worry and care on a sireline. It has been proven that the Y chromosome pales in genetic comparison to the X(both good and bad genes BTW).
Hyperion is all over the breed in other places in pedigrees. His blood will never be gone!
Just look at the history of the sire line itself. Even in other breeds(and animals, humans, etc). The weak y chromosome literally breeds itself out.

I think the exception would be the human race. Humans defy logic and nature. It's what they do best.

LOL!
Good one.
But seriously, that seems to be the case with the y line in all living species.
Well, at least the ones that have been documented and/or genomed.
Well, the Hyperion-line still exists in Europe - but it changed totally it's character. It has always been a source of stamina in stoutness originally via Aureole to High Hat (owned by Sir Winston Churchill!) and High Line. But now it only exists as a spinter-line via Tudor Minstrel with Cadeau Genereux the most important representative.
Here in Germany we have Toylsome - winner of the Prix de la Foret - as a young sire from that sire-line.

I'd also be interested in knowing which sires keep the Hyperion line going both here & in Europe. Is there a resource to easily find that info w/o looking at each stallion's ped?
As for humans, we rarely apply logic to anything. Unfortunately, we weaken the thoroughbred breeding (soundness etc) using the same lack of common sense.

Take a little time to build up this site, there are so many high class horses descending from Hyperion in the 5th remove. You can shorten the list by selecting "Hengste" in the "Geschlecht"-field.
