One Cool Cat Breaks down

Postby Ruffian » Wed Sep 29, 2004 11:32 am

So unbelieveable that OCC has broken down just in time so as not to disgrace himself AGAIN at Longchamp, and be in Coolmores stallion Directories for next year, Coolmore's horses always seem to go at exactly the right time- good or bad  Yuck.

End of One Cool Cat's career

by Martin Kelly, PA Sport

FORMER Classic hope One Cool Cat has run his last race after breaking down on the Ballydoyle gallops on Wednesday morning.

The three-year-old suffered a fracture to his condylar bone on his near-hind leg after finishing a piece of work in preparation for this weekend's Prix de l'Abbaye.

One Cool Cat spent the afternoon being operated on at Troytown where the prognosis was said to be very good.

It has yet to be decided whether he will begin his stud career at Ashford in Kentucky or Coolmore's Irish base.

"It is highly unfortunate that One Cool Cat's racing career has come to an end as I always hoped that one day he would display on the racecourse the brilliance he has always shown us at home," said trainer Aidan O'Brien.

The son of Storm Cat was long championed by the handler as one of the fastest horses he had ever trained but despite being a dual Group 1 winner as a juvenile, he beat only one home in the ,000 Guineas in May.

However, the imposing colt was found to be suffering from a heart defect following that race and after missing the Irish equivalent went on to try his hand at sprinting.

The drop back in trip looked to have rejuvenated One Cool Cat as he powered home in the Group 3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes at The Curragh last month, but it failed to see him successful at the top level.

The colt went on to finish third in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York but could only manage sixth in Haydock Park's Sprint Cup earlier this month.

One Cool Cat had been partnered by Jamie Spencer on his five starts this season and he said: "It is very disappointing news. He is a high-class horse and we probably hadn't seen the best of him yet."

Hope that heart defect isn't anything heritable, since he'll no doubt get a large book.

Inbred 3 x 3 to Northern Dancer, plus he has the requisite cross of Mr. Prospector. Where in the heck will they find the usual first book of 150 mares to breed to this animal?

Oh Sparta- haven't you heard? They are going to start doing 2 x 2!!! Oh and of course, the more inbred to 'top sires' the more chance of getting a 'top horse' .... lol I can see the marketing now

With bloodstock prices being what they've been in Argentina lately due to political turmoil, they could probably fly over a couple of planeloads of group-winning mares from there without breaking the bank, but I'm not holding my breath. Still, South America would be one major source of possible outcrosses; so would Germany.

I agree mahubah, Germany is a great untapped resource, so was South Africa, but it seems there are less and less homebreds there now(all by NH sires- that stood in SH- then shipped on to SAF)
is south america coming along now?

M, I'm crazy right ... why am I liking the idea of Running Stag over an Acatenango mare?
