What is every body feeding their yearlings? There are so many brands of feed out there. I am currently feeding Purina's Equine Jr. Any body like another brand or formula better? How about harder keepers?
Just curious.

I've been feeding mine Safe Choice....I had a foal in 2005 showing signs of an ulcer....so at my friends suggestion...I switched from Omolene 200 ...It looks and probably tastes like cardboard...but they have all matured nicely...
ALL of mine are on it and they range from 5 months-22 years
Tractor Supply just started carrying it as well as some Purina products...makes my trip a LOT faster....

I read an article in The Horse.com that said we are feeding horses far too much grain and messing up their natural omega 3/omega 6 ration..
Working horses need grain but the article cautioned that we should be mindful that grain is heavy in omega 6 and add omeba 3 products such as ground flax seed, brewers yeast, fish oil, ect... Never feed corn and especially never feed corn oil to any equine.
Oh yea, green grass is an excellent source of omega 3.

Hey Griff
We've used veg oil and occasionally corn oil to increase the fat percentage in the feed and there's a lot of literature out there about that.

In some of the coldest winters its been a good source of safe energy.
I know there are problems with high percentages of unprocessed corn, but what's the problem with corn oil?

The "THE HORSE.COM article has a chart detailing the amount of omega 3 and omega 6 in various products.. grain, soybeans and even Camola are high in omega 6 but corn oil's omaga 6 vs omega 3 ration is through the roof..
Green grass is very high in omega 3 as is flax seed but the real champion is fish oil.
Go to The Horse.Com and look up the article. It's good reading.
Also, I belive SmartPac also has a very good chart on the omega 3 vs omega 6 ithat is very good
In summary, The Horse.Com article does not advocate not feeding grain but does recommend we do something to try to restire the natural Omegea 3 vs Omega 6 ration

I really like the Triple Crown products, the low starch and the growth. My young ones don't seem to like the growth so much, and it has a lot of molasses in it. I stick with the low starch. I also feed the Nutrena Safe Choice to the other ones. I love that TSC carries it now, and it is about $4 cheaper a bag...a big difference when you have to feed 20 horses.
How much grain are you feeding your youngsters?

Theres a good article on the TTimes about a Va Tech service that is only $100 that is a thorough individualized analysis for a horse. Makes lots of sense for horses in training, broodmares and the like. My guys are just munching pasture so not a whole lot of need for me at this point.

They don't use Corn hence the exceptional Glycemic Index despite being a "sweet Feed" Great product, I highly recommend it. I think the safe Choice is good also but the Triple Crown is the best availble I have found in my area. http://www.triplecrownfeed.com/docs/052 ... illPhd.pdf

Notice on page 2 of the article I put a link too....Corn 70% starch! But at least in the past in was a "cheap" filler thats why it is present in almost all feeds to some extent, even the Safe Choice (last I checked anyway). Except the Triple Crown. Of course you pay more for the Beet Pulp product.
