High Chaparral (IRE) sires 1-2-3 in Derby

Postby arganaut2 » Sat Apr 10, 2010 7:31 pm

High Chaparral (IRE) has just sired 1-2-3 in the prestigious Gr 1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick, Sydney, Australia.

Would anyone know of a similar feat by a sire anywhere else in the world please?

Sadler's Wells did it twice in the Irish derby in 1999 and 2002 (High Chaparral actually won that edition) and zabeel did it in the Caulfield Cup in I think 1999

chaparral did not do it alone ----he obviously mixed well with the female families of the dams ------if you could list their names(dams) it would be of interest to see if there is a common link

Interesting topic, we had a mare out of this line, sadly she past away two years ago, but I know the family well, didn't though know about this Canadian link, BTW Northstar tell me how it went with your mare and foaling. Good luck!!

Thanks Wallinga.

"SINCE what is now known as the Australian Derby was first run at Randwick in 1861, only two sires appear to have achieved the remarkable feat of providing the first three placegetters in the great Classic. Both world class racehorses, they are New Zealand bred Carbine, the source of the trifecfa with his first Australian crop in 1897, and High Chaparral, a Coolmore shuttler, who gained the glory on Saturday with his first runners.

It is very rare too for a sire to have a trifecta in a big time event. It has happened once in the Cox Plate, provided by Helios in 1948, but has not achieved the distinction in the Victoria Derby or the Melbourne Cup. Although the first three home in the 1876 Melbourne Cup were by Tim Whiffler, an England bred Tim got the first two and third was by one of numerous Aussie Tims.

Owned and trained by Etienne De Mestre, the man who won the first two Melbourne Cups with Archer, the local Tim Whiffler with the Melbourne Cup placegetter himself won the 1867 Cup. Fifth on that occasion was another runner by the name of Tim Whiffler." - Brian Russell, Australian breeding expert

I have a really nice yearling filly by High Chaparral. Here is the mother's pedigree if anyone would like to take a stab at her:

She is also a very heavy bay rabicano so she's quite stunning too!

Nicely bred mare Terri. Love the bottom line. All the best of luck with the foal.

My Desert King mare, Splendeur just had a beautiful filly foal by Hurricane Run at Castlehyde Stud on April 19, and is booked to High Chaparral this month. Wish I knew how to post the picture emailed to me by the farm this morning, but, sadly, I have never mastered the art!!

By the way, thanks for your recommendations a couple of years ago on mare care farms in Ireland. Castlehyde has been great.

I'm really glad your mare is getting looked after properly. Especially in these times where the market has gone through the floor. I know it's bad everywhere but there have been a few yards who had client horses and they let them starve. Haven't heard of any stud farms as such but have heard of a couple pre-training yards.

I think you will be very happy with your High Chap baby. After Penelope was born I wished I had gone to him with everything. My filly is total class and so easy to deal with, unlike her mother. But I would suspect your Hurricane Run foal is exactly the same.

I haven't actually been to Ireland to visit the farm yet. We were set to go for the Goffs Orby Sale last September but my wife fell and broke her ankle the week before and we had to cancel.

Terri: Here is as photo of my Hurricane Run filly born on April 18. The photo was taken on April 19, when she was a day old.

Oh I love her - look at those legs! Looks like a classic winner already! Congratualtions! Mom looks like a big mare herself.
