Suggestions Requested for Corrupting Youth!

Postby Bast » Thu Oct 14, 2010 5:49 pm

I am looking for ideas on how I can inculcate a love of horses and of horse racing in my two young cousins (great-nieces?). They like horses, which is a start.

Last year, I modified a nice stick horse by outfitting it with a detailed, realistic set of blinkers. This was a hit!

Any other ideas? They live some distance from me.

Start sending them Breyer horses for Christmas. There's a model of Rachel Alexandra with a card on the back of the box detailing her story. There's quite a few race horse items available. This was my favorite company when I was collecting:

Would they be interested in having their own Virtual Stables (depending on whether they're old enough to navigate the intenet) so that they can follow the works and races of some horses of their choosing?

They are too young, but I will tuck that thought away for retrieval in a few years. 8)

No, but I doubt if their parents would agree to such. Sigh.

Hi Bast,
Here's the latest in the Breyer collection. This is just the race tack and it's $30 without the horse. Looks pretty realistic though....if this don't hook them on race horses nothing will:>) TJ

Maybe a subscription to the BloodHorse for them to share? There are lots of really pretty pictures for horse crazy young girls to enjoy and when they get older they can read the articles about the industry.

Take them to a NICE track or big event and GAMBLE with them.

I took my 4 year old son to the Preakness (big event - not so nice track)this year - he picked horses by name. He Picked Strike a Deal and won $8.40 (stupid dad bet to show instead of win :D )- GAME OVER!!!
After dancing to the window - he turned to me and said - "Dad - when is Fair Hill, again?"

I wish to be nominated for Father of the Year!!!!

Saratoga during the week. Bring lawn chairs, a picnic lunch, and enjoy the races. Combine with a vacation to Lake George. Maybe you'll hook the parents, too.

Horse books! My favorite when I was a kid was "King of the Wind" by Marguerite Henry. It is the story of the Godolphin Arabian, one of the foundation stallions of the thoroughbred. It is for ages 9-12.

Marguerite Henry's other books are also good. I loved them all!

Wow, I may have to get this for myself, too! I should have an old Breyer of the right size around here somewhere!

Thanks for a very good idea.!

They're too young for that, but I will keep it in mind. I think I will send them some of the old issues that I need to clear out anyway. Thanks. 8)
