Making a Broodmare

Postby Diane » Mon Aug 27, 2012 12:59 pm

Stallions are made. What about broodmares? Something with a good ff, solid pedigree, good conformation and a so so race record. What are the steps to make or undo a broodmare's future?
The first foal? Sell it? At a big sale or privately? Or keep it to race and pour enough $ into it to show it has something...fast works, MSW wins etc?
What else?

take out a second moragage and pore it all into her first foal to make sure it's a graded staks winner.

Step 1: get the mare to the best stallion possible (that suits her.)
Step 2: give the foal every advantage growing up
Step 3: either through a sale or through retained ownership, make sure that the foal ends up in great hands so that he has the best chance of maximizing his potential on the track.
Steo 4: repeat the first 3 steps.

I like a BM that, descends from a SOS & BMS family. I look for stallions & mares that are found frequently in SW pedigrees. That will separate the wheat from the chaff.

LB's advice is good, i'd go even further step #2. Give the foal every nutritional advantage while still in the mare, if you don't live in Kentucky, feed the mare.a limestone supplement and a good vitamin mineral supplement, i'm feeding my mare.a daily biotin supplement too. Since i plan to race my foal, its nothing but the best for mama. The best nutrition at the earliest stages of developement and throughout gestation; the result can only be good for a race horse. Of course keep everything balanced.

And as I advised my AFROTC cadets at Duke, try to be very lucky.

If you have enough faith in the mare to breed her, I think you should also be prepared to race at least her first foal. The breeder has the greatest motivation to make her a success. That's especially true if she is an unraced or unplaced mare. But put a couple of winners under her name and buyers won't care so much that she was unraced or unplaced.

To put it another way, why would you rely on someone else to make your mare?

I just produced a gr2 win and a gr3 win on the same meeting in Melbourne Australia, last saturday.
I would agree with the above.
