Accident at Mountaineer - news/update?

Postby jellac » Mon Oct 04, 2004 6:10 pm

Did anyone else see the awful pile-up of horses and riders at Mountaineer this evening? We're concerned about the wellfare of the riders that may have been involved and of course the horses.....hope everyone came out of it OK but can't imagine that they did. It looked like the 7 horse went down and the 8, in trying to leap over him, stumbled badly....very anxious to know.

From the Equibase site:

SASSY LEAR away slowly, began to respond hitting the 1/4 pole, surged to even terms 4 wide in upper stretch, put away SHI SHI DOLL drawing off late. SHI SHI DOLL tracked the early pace, moved evenly through the turn, fired inside the 1/4 pole drawing even on the inside of SASSY LEAR in upper stretch, tried to go with rival but proved no match late settling for place. TRACEY'S MINER was reluctant to load, bucked hard at the break, was far back into the turn, circled out 7 wide into upper stretch, gave even response to outbid others. ESKIMO ALY slow early, labored near the back through the turn, rallied gaining ground into upper stretch, checked a spill near the 1/8 pole losing all momentum. LADY CASTLEWOOD outrun early, lost ground varying little into the stretch, was going evenly when forced to steady near a spill at the 1/8 pole. DIABOLIC hustled in early pursuit, chased MISS CRAFTY LADY along the inside through the turn, appeared to be weakening when checked as the leader broke down, put away from there. MISS CRAFTY LADY broke to a quick lead, hustled the pace through the turn, took a bad step breaking the left front leg in upper stretch. ACE IN PLACE raced a step slow in second flight, traveled 4 wide with little change on the turn, fell over a broken down MISS CRAFTY LADY near the 1/8 pole, appeared to be okay regaining legs and running off after the race.

A broken leg isn't necessarily the death sentence for a horse that it once was.

I would think that a RIP Miss Crafty Lady would be appropriate here for a $5K claiming horse.

Are you possibly referring to last evening?

Never mind, I see the race you are talking about occurred last night (Oct 4, not Oct 5).

I would say that Miss Crafty Lady was probably humanely destroyed. Les Mawing was scheduled to ride #4 in tonights first race for Charlie Walker so the charts should say in about 25 minutes if he did indeed ride tonite or not. I missed the changes.... now the #2 horse has flipped and is stuck under the gate. Sigh.

Maureen Andrews is NOT riding her mount in the first race so it is possible she is injured or sore from last evening, will check with Darren when he gets back from feeding. There is no jockey change listed for Les Mawings mount so he is riding.

If anyone wants to watch the Mtr races live online go to http://www.mtrgaming.com/racing/liveracing.html and click on "live racing" then click on dial up or broadband. Its the same feed you get at the track, so much better than TVG!
