Re: born 1931 - Athanasius
An article in the San Diego Union (28 December 1946) states that hundreds of German horses were shipped to the US Army remount service. Over 250 in number. Among them were Athanasius, Samurai, Nordlicht, and Cicerone. The newspaper article mentions that the source of that information was "The Horse," which was the Remount Service's publication. (I see that Nordlicht was used by the Chenerys in VA at one time.)
I suspect that most were sold on the open market, since the need for cavalry horses had diminished.
Also, there is a mention in a 1951 Tucson newspaper, but behind a paywall. From the tidbits I can gather it says that Athanasius was in Tucson in 1951, a stallion on a farm owned by James W. Livingston (80 acres on West Wetmore Road).

Good luck.

Re: born 1931 - Athanasius
The 250+ horses shipped to the Remount Svc in 1946 were seized as war prize by the US Army from German studs. The TBs among them were removed to the USA over the protest of the North American, British, French, et al. registries. The Remount was disbanded in 1949, its horses dispersed at public auctions held at various Remount stations throughout the US.
Per Remount rcds., Athanasius was 15.3-1/2h & weighed #1150. (Sorry, but I don't have a date deceased for either him, or Flares.) He was sold to James W Livingston at the Pomona, CA Remount sale, 25Oct1949. Livingston had moved his breeding op from Tucson, AZ to near Denver, CO by 1953 (DRF 21May1953). He & his wife perished in a plane crash in 1956. Athanasius appears to have still been alive at that time (DRF 05May1956).

Nordlicht was sold for $20.3K at the Front Royal, VA Remount sale, 18Oct1949, to a syndicate of Virginia breeders including C. Chenery. He died 1968 at La Branche plantation, St. Charles Par., LA.
