Genetic Question

Postby Camish » Fri Apr 08, 2005 7:01 am

If a foal is born without an eye can that be passed on to her foals? There is a mare I am looking at and that is the deal with her. Thanks! :)

Camish, in some other mammalian species an individual born w bi-lateral (both) missing eyes can indeed pass that trait on - but I haven't seen any data on this as a unilateral trait. I certainly wouldn't buy her w/out a consult from a veterinary genetics specialist.

A couple months ago, I tried to find if a deformed eye is genetically passed and couldn't find any on-line references to research in this area. It seems to be low on the priorities for research.

This was for a horse that had been permitted to breed before I was dealing with him. Happily, that horse is now a gelding because there are already too many horses out there in need of good homes. Any defects makes it all the harder for them to find good/safe homes. And blindness (even partial) can make it very hard.

I don't know squat about genetics, but If nothing else, the odds may be higher that she'll produce a similar foal. That would be enough for me to focus on her having a riding career instead.
