We here at Wild Cherry farms are pleased to announce that Multiple Grade II stakes winner City By Night will be moving to our farm for next years breeding season. He is the son of multiple Grade I Stakes winner Slew City Slew, Himself a millionaire and sire of over 59 stakes horses with over $20,000,000 in progeny earnings.
We are very excited to bring a stallion of this quality to Arkansas, City By Night has earnings of over $504,000 and won or placed in 9 stakes races 6 of which were graded and on the board in 15 of 21 starts, City By Night won the Lexington S (GII) defeating Prince Of Thieves and Roar at age 3 and the Stephen Foster H (GII) at age 4 and was still running till age 6. City By Night won from 5 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles and was ranked 1 lb. below Skip Away on the Experimental Free Handicap.
We know that we have our work cut out for us. We will be trying to get a better book of mares to him than he has had in the past. While his current stats are a little disconserting we believe that we can raise the bar by moving him to Arkansas where the stallion compitetion is not as strong as Illinois, where he has been standing.
It's early to be planning your next matings but we will be giving deep discounted breedings to quality mares who are stakes or stakes placed. I think in time with a good book of mares we can raise the stats to where they should be for the caliber of horse that City By Night is.
Any comments are welcome.
Thanks,
Tom

City By Night has had 2 msw winners and 2 placed [one of which a was D.Q. to second after the win], from April 26th to May 2nd for a seven days progeny earnings of $36,638 from maidens. Not a bad week for at all.
My question is, what would be a good stud fee for City By Night's first season in Arkansas? One that will attract quality mares.

I would try $750.00 - $1,000. Your going to have a lot of competition from Storm and a Half. Which may get a raise in stud fee after the Oaklawn Meet. Storm and a Half will get the best mares in Arkansas next year you must market your stallion at a price where he can get enough mares to be able to establish himself in Arkansas.
City by Night was standing this year in IL for $1,000 -- I would think that would be a reasonable fee to publish. Unlike Storm and a Half, City by Night is a graded stakes winner of over $500K, he should be able to do better than Storm and a Half, who is unraced.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

well I would hope that with City By Night's race record we will be able to intice some of the folks who have already bred to Storm and a Half once to try City By Night. He is a nice horse who hade a lot of try, also the fact that he was able to race till age 6 says a lot about soundness. And if the next few weeks keep going like this last week he will be looking really good.

It would depend on your long-range plans and the state breeding program. In PA, the stallion owner gets a 10% bonus on 1,2,3 placings. Those earnings would come "down the road", but I've know several people who've done well selling reasonable or even bargain seasons just to get a good number and made nice money for quite awhile, even after they didn't have the stallion anymore.
Promotion is the key. It takes a lot of contact, calls, and possible deal making to get decent mares.

City By Night is on a roll last couple of weeks with maiden winners, he got his first 2 year old winner yesterday. 4 1/2 furlongs and won by over seven lengths. Progeny earnings are now over $217,000 and climbing on up the third crop sires list. His progeny earnings the last 2 weeks have been over $60,000, with out any repeat winners.
